Has Anyone installed a Viper 5900 or 5901 in their 3rd Gen?

I ordered a Viper 5901 off amazon for 204.95 shipped, I also have the Toyota Imobilizer bypass (the one that doesn't involve me leaving a key in the car) I have the wiring diagram from the12volt.com and I am extremely comfortable cutting and splicing wires in my car (Soldered of course). I was wondering if anyone else has attempted this install and if there were any specifics that I should look out for. Thanks!

I know that ChildrenOfBodom has a Viper remote start installed on his runner, he'll probably see this thread sometime today and be able to offer more info.

haha good call david. yeah, me and my brother installed it, it's an absolute pain in the ass to do.

took us 6 hours, I would certainly recommend having someone do it for you. luckily my brother works in these kinds of things daily at work, he knew how and what to do.

Hey

Installing this or any RS unit takes TIME and effort.

I have installed dozens and only 1 on my 3rd gen 4runner.

YOU MUST FIND OUT IF YOU HAVE A IMMOBILIZER in or not.

If you do, you need a bypass (check my FS thread).

Remember:

1. HIDE YOUR WIRES
2. Use a MM
3. Solder when possible
4. Door locks require a reverse diode
5. Remote start bypass if need
6. Stay away from 3M scotch locks
7. Use the tach wire under hood on diag plug or behind the dash
8. BREATHE!!!
9. Take your time

It is easy once you get started.

Video tape yourself doing it if you can. That way if you get stuck you can watch what you did.

I do have an immobilizer and I already have the bypass and I am not worried about that at all. I am prepared to take my time and stay away from scotch-locks (shudders), I also have a nice pile of diodes ready. I am not worried about the install I was just curious if anyone had any first hand experience with their 4runner, also I like the video idea, I think I'm going to try that.

Also The only thing I have not found in any diagrams is the priority unlock wire (could it just be two pulses to the unlock wire?), I can always find it with my DMM, but if anyone knows where/what color it is it would save me some hassle.

the 4runner is on the easy side of the vehicles for something like this. I tried the 12volt.com list for 2000 model, and found it to be a bit wrong, and trying to do things a far more difficult way than needed. I removed my gauge cluster and placed the unit behind it, to keep it easy to service, but still so far up the dash nobody could reach it w/ out knowing where it was. This gave me the advantage of being able to grab the tach signal off the cluster. I could also grab the trigger for the door pins off of the cluster w/ out the pain of diode isolating them all. They all trigger the same light in the cluster, so way run wires to every door pin?

As far as the door locks, if i remember right, there are three wires one lock, and two unlock, one is an unlock all, and the other works like the priority unlock. I could be wrong on that, its been a little while since i did the install on the 4runner.

I would plan to spend a couple $$s to get at least a 24 hour subscription to TIS site to verify all of the wiring needed to hook up everything.

on an added note, toyota trucks are his specialty considering he drives one. he could take one apart blindfolded.

I put a clifford rsx in my Camaro without much hassle but the lack of info by viper has me clueless on what the hell the wires do. Anyone have a link or a write up that was already done on a 1997?

Hey where exactly are you having an issue?
1. Does your 4runner have an immobilizer?
2. Do you have a BYPASS (if question 1 is yes)
3. It is EZ. All of the wires are on the driver's side kick panel and right under steering wheel.

Just tossing this out there in case you didn't know.....
I have done alot of stereo's and a few standard cheap brand alarms.

Viper/directed elec products are not sold direct to the public, ever. They are only sold to licensed dealers/installers, and they are not allowed to sell them unless they install it. If you bought it off a website it is probly stolen, at the very least you have no warranty, as viper/directed elec will not warranty anything that wasn't done by there certified techs. This is also why you can't find much install info, they keep a close eye on that stuff.

We have remote start vipers on all our vehicles, there expensive, especially on luxury cars like lexus, with the bypass's and all. We paid around $800 installed for most of them, but you also get a lifetime warranty on all but the remotes. We have used that a few times. Although I have heard they don't offer lifetimes anymore.....

Good luck if your not done, and hope you don't burn anything up.

It's probly stolen because directed elec doesn't sell them to the public. That means some one got it underhandedly and is now selling it online. It might not be stolen per say, but its not legit either. Either way one of the main points of an alarm is the warranty to me, if it breaks or damages your car or starts a fire in your wires, you have no recourse, unless it was installed by a certified tech.

I just wanted to make sure people know that. I have knowledge of this because I wanted to do my own also but found all this out after doing research, in the end we paid the tech because a $40k car burning down/breaking stuff with no recourse is not something we wanted to worry about. It is also overpriced for them to install it but we had the money at the time....

An aside our alarms have been mostly trouble free and I recomend Viper/directed elec, remote start alarms to everyone I know. :reddance:
