has anyone noticed this

i have a 2011 SR5 and i've started experiencing it also. not too often, but i have felt it. i've been ignoring it for the most part, i'll mention it when i bring it in for the 5K service
 
Y'know what's weird? I only sense the shudder coming out of the Costco parking lot when my radio is on. Happened a few times, I usually snap the radio off and listen for engine miss, but it's immediately gone. That's what it feels like to me.
I think reflashing these ecu's is like installing updates to your computer. If your comp needs the update it accepts it. If you already have the latest it will still accept the flash but basically just resets defaults and hopefully either will cure the glitches from the trans.

I talked to the technician this afternoon and he told me that reflashing the ECM usually works to clear the "judder" his term, from the shift points. He said that draining the fluid will usually clear anything else from the clutch plates - so when that failed they didn't have any other choice, but to replace the transmission.

Hopefully this will fix it, I'm regretting telling them about it now. Better to get it replaced under warranty than have it fail later and come out of my pocket. They did say that the transmission was on back order - so this may take a while.

This is good information to have. Do you have a Toyota Case number you can share?
 
my 2011 sr5 is doing it. grrrr.

i hit stop and go traffic for 5 minutes each day crawling 1 mile to the interstate on a pisspoor Arkansas design (I430 south to I30 for folks in arkansas).

I have that shudder, jutter, whatever, from 1st to 2nd. very noticeable when you are crawling in slow traffic or parking lot.

I don't have a case number from Toyota on it yet.

It looks like the Transmission is having to come from Japan and is on back order, not sure when this will get resolved. This may take several weeks.

I had ignored the shudder for a long time, but it seemed like it was getting more persistent and more predictable. That is why I wanted to take it into the dealer and get the problem into the system.

Please keep us all updated on this issue. I've got the same problem which I recently took to the dealership and they just said it was normal shifting. :shrug:
Next time you go back in, can you see if there is any way we can reference your situation at our Toyota dealer?
 
Not that I'm glad to see other people have problems, but with more of us having issues I would think that there is a lot better chance of getting a solution. I'm with Mason, if the new transmission fixes the problem it would be nice to be able to reference that with our dealers.
 
Just a quick update.

I went and picked up my 4runner from the dealer yesterday. They can't tell me when the new transmission will even be in the US, much less in Jacksonville at the dealer. I use my truck for work and the only rental I can get is a prius, so I took my truck back while I wait for the transmission.

I did notice that the problem isn't nearly as bad with the new transmission fluid. You can only barely feel the shudder. After getting new fluid you can definitely tell how bad it had gotten over 20,000 miles.

Hopefully a new transmission will fix the issue. I'll keep everyone updated. Like I said it may take several weeks.

Thanks for the update. Like the others said if we can get a Toyota case number it will help those of us who havent started this process. I had a heck of time getting the shimmy problem due to bad tires taken care of. They want to immediately point to "thats how it is". I know all too well "back order"....my wife had a jeep during Chrysler bankruptcy and every time time the car went into the shop the part was on back order. Some parts took up to three months to get replenished. Is Toyota offering you a loaner car during the wait? Chrysler told me they werent responsible for part availability and thus didnt have to provide me a loaner. Thank god the issues didnt leave the car stranded and we could still use it.
 
I will try to get a case number, but the dealer hasn't wanted to give me much information other than updates on what's going on.

They did give me a prius to drive, which wasn't bad, but my job requires me to drive off road almost daily and the prius isn't up to the challenge. That's why I went and picked up the truck, I'm just going to use it until the transmission gets here and the dealer needs it back to do the work.

Thanks for the update. At least they were willing to provide you a rental during your wait. Better then Chrysler did for me. If you can get that case number that would be a huge help. I have to get my 4Runner in the body shop and when it comes out I will put it in for the 5k check and will start my process in getting this addressed. Keep us updated.
 
I have been having the same issue with my 2011 SR5. I got it in January and didn't think much about it until recently as it seems like I'm either noticing the "shudder" more or it is doing it more...not sure which. I'm going in for my 10k maintenance tomorrow morning. I'm going to mention it, but won't be able to have them really look into it tomorrow. I'm leaving for my cabin in Chama, NM Friday and refuse to delay the trip!! :) However, when I get back I intend to bring it back in and have them diagnose it or at least start trying to find a remedy. I'll keep checking in to see if anyone has found something! Good luck to everyone!
 
Just got a call from the body shop and it will probably take 2 weeks before I can get the 4runner to the dealer and have the shudder looked at. I will update as soon as I know more. If anyone ends up with a case number over this issues and can post it it would be helpful.
 
Add another to the list of people with the shuddering issue. I have a '10 TE with a VIN that is past the previously posted TSB range.

I am planning to tackle this twofold, first I'm going to try to see if I can get an ECU flash. After that I am planning to switch to a synthetic trans fluid (Probably Redline D4 ATF). Hopefully this will alleviate the issue as it is driving me crazy.
I will post back once I get this done, probably 2-3 weeks as I am in the process of moving right now.

It is a shudder that is like three quick vibrations; you feel easily in the stering wheel. Now it has been two months and 3k miles since then and it is as obvious as ever to me. Maybe he meant the truck would break me in by 5k!

As a follow up..today my 5k service was done and I presented the same shudder issue to the same service rep. When I was told the truck was ready I got the same response as when I was there at 2,200 miles, truck is operating normal and there were no service codes. I asked specifically are you telling me the shudder is normal or are you saying the tech did not find any shudder during the shifiting 1st to 2nd? Answer 'no shudder found". I said let's go for a ride, you & me. Soon as we hit the road it shuddered, me driving BTW, told that was normal. The rep then drove it and I asked, you don't feel that shudder? he responded it was slight and not an issue in his opinion. I then put him on a slight incline and asked try it now... truck did the most obvious shudder then.... he looked at me and said let's go back I'm going to call the Toyota factory rep and find out what they say. He agreed it is very obvious and consistently present and he wants to get an answer now himself. I'll post more as I hear back.
