Has Anyone Used This Approach

I would like to thank you all for your information, opinions, and input on my question. I think this is all going to help in my very first car buying experience. I have been researching the 4Runner for about a month and in the next week i will start getting my prices.

Thanks again for all the help.

I bet you pay MSRP on every vehicle you buy. At least it sounds that way.

Thanks for your Opinion

No way! I try and negotiate the price on everything I buy. When I asked the guy at Best Buy if he could knock a couple hundred off the price of the TV he looked at me like I was crazy. But went I went to tweeter they did. Four whell parts wholesalers will always take at least 10% off your order if you ask them. I just love to negotiate. The price I pay for a vehicle depends on the vehicle. I have paid anywhere from $1000 over invoice (2000 Land Rover Discovery) to $500 under (97 Isuzu Trooper at end of year). I just dont see much point sending time faxing and emailing to save a hundred dollars or so when I am already spending $35000. I have always tried to skip the salesperson and deal with the sales manager directly. I have purchased seven new vehicles and have always had to walk out the front door. Sometimes they chased me out and met my deal, sometimes they called me a day later, and sometimes I never heard from them and went to another dealer.

I guess I shouldn't say not to do the fax approach. If you dont lke to negotiate and it works then do it. I just remember when I used to get those my sales manager would quote a number lower than he would not really do and send it back knowing he was giving the other dealer hell. (see where the lying comes in already!) I suppose my argument is not going to make sense to most people because they can only see one side of the fence. I think I feel sympathy for sales people because I assume they are all as nice and genuine as I was. We all know this is not true, so excuse me for not making much sense. Additionally, when I sold I was extremely curteous and professional and would never have treated someone the way described in some of the above posts. I guess you just dont treat customers coming in to a dealership where you cant buy anything for less than $45000 that way.

Don't ever feel that you have to stay with only one sales person at a dealership. If you don't like the salesperson get rid of him like yesterdays garbage. Get a new one right away. You don't have to explain your self either. They are there to screw you out of as much money as possible, educate yourself and protect your self. Never let a single jerk off sales person waste your time. Dont ever let a agressive sales person dictate terms to you, tell them you will do what you feel is best for you and get rid of him. Never talk monthly payments, simply say you are looking for the best price the dealership will offer, you are ready to buy now, and do not intend to waste time making this purchase. So lets have your best price, then look at your watch. If they stall, simply say I am going to buy at a different dealership if I have to, perhaps you can reach me on my cell before I sign a purchase contract. Walk briskly to the door don't pause go right to your car. You need to make it clear that you are in charge not the dealership.

Family and friends beg me to go to the dealer when they are ready to make a purchase. I have had lots of experience doing this. Remember the dealer needs you, you don't need him. Also never act timid, look them right in the eye when you dictate terms to them. Never show anger, weakness, excitement, or raise your voice. If they promise you something, demand it is put in writing. If the dealer wants to put their dealer advertising on your car charge them $100 a month, no dealer puts his name on my suv for free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So what would happen when the dealer would make a rediculous quote and the person would come to buy the car? Wouldnt he have to honor that quote that he put in writing? Or would be hit them with tons of fees to make his money up?

Lat4r, honestly if the customer came in I would have to tell them that we already sold the car, etc. I hated it. I had to play guinea pig for the managers. Salesman generally dont know what the managers computer screen is telling them, and dont know how much money they are really making. So basically, when this situation would occur, the person would get very angry at me while the sales manager sat in his office. As to something mentioned above, when you ask a dealer to give you his very best price, dont expect that to really be the best price.
