Havik's Built Thread

I finally got my Magnuson supercharger installed. No details yet, haven't driven it or had it dyno'd, but here are some pictures from the shop:

Great build, how is it riding with 35's? I didn't see you mention much cutting or body lift?

I've gotten more into rock crawling and I'm seriously considering this route

I love the 35's. I got into rock crawling as well, that's why I went with the 35's. You do have to message the fenders a lot. Be prepared to have them get bashed and pushed out and have to pull them off and reshape them. I've been trying to get some fiberglass fenders that would give me more room, but the shop doesn't seem to be interested in making money. So until someone else starts making them, I'm sticking with massaging the stock ones.

I haven't done a body lift because lining up the steel bumpers and the snorkel would be a pain in the ass and might not even be possible. Plus, I don't think it is necessary.

Update on the supercharger...

I haven't dyno'd it or anything like that, but I've driven it around for a little while now. It feels pretty darn good. This is my fourth supercharged vehicle so I have a lot of experience with adding superchargers, but this one was the least Jekyll and Hyde difference. Not that, that is a bad thing, but don't expect a tire roasting beast. At least not if you have 35's, a ton of armor, roof rack, Hi-lift, full size spare, etc., etc., etc. The truck is great now, don't get me wrong, but nothing like adding a Paxton to a Mustang as an example. It feels much healthier (read faster and stronger) than stock, which is amazing since with all the added weight my truck was a pig.

I used to peg out at about 80 MPH going up the grapevine with my full gear (RTT, camping gear, ARB fridge, etc.). I just loaded the truck up with all the gear and headed up the grapevine as a test. It got easily up to 95 MPH before I lifted. It felt like it still had a lot of steam left. In fact, I don't doubt it would easily crack 100 MPH going up that hill with ease. I tested going from 75 to 90 as a passing maneuver and the truck felt better doing that now with all the weight than it did stock. This is exactly what I was looking for, to gain back all the performance (and then some) I lost with all of my mods and additional weight of gear. I wasn't looking to win a stop-light grands prix, if you are I'd say look elsewhere. Perhaps the URD/Whipple setup would be better suited at that. If you are looking to recover lost performance and then some, this is a great kit for that purpose.

Next mod, I ordered and installed Wit's End's fire extinguisher mount:

I also bought SPC's Upper Control Arms:
http://www.spcalignment.com/component/spc/?task=part_description&pid=25480

I'll get those installed next week. I got them to add some caster and hopefully move the tires a little away from the back of the fender. I'll post of pics and thoughts when I get them installed.

How are you finding the fire extinguisher mount? I'm looking for somewhere to secure an extinguisher. Any rattles or does it impede forward movement of the seat?

Edit: Just read their website noting some restricting on forward movement. . . Makes it tougher for my use case. . .

It doesn't rattle at all as long as you have an extinguisher in it and locked down. If you don't have one in it, then yes the arms that hold the extinguisher do rattle around.

Yes, it does impede forward motion of the seat, but not by a whole hell of a lot. I'm only 5'8" tall, so when I set my seat for my height, it still has room to move forward.

Excellent, thanks much

Appreciate the response, I've started to find a love for rock crawling hence the 35's. My only concern was doing a body lift, I'm not that interested in going down that route tbh but cutting and pushing back sure I'm down.

I've been in a few body lifted trucks and I've never liked how they completely change the charactristics, it's my daily and log distance road tripper so I'm trying to find a balance. Glad to hear you're loving them :yo:

Trucks looks good..why did you switch front bumpers?

Needed the clearance for the 35's.

I really dig the simplicity of the SSO bumper. With the release of their Stage 2 High Clearance Side Protection (image below), do you think it would give enough room to clear the 35s? My understanding is that you just need to be able to sit tires as far forward as you can when aligning, correct?

Hey, sorry for the late response on this, I don't browse the forums too often. I can't say for certain if they will clear, but it looks like they will. I wish they had this before I took my SSO bumper off and got the full one. I would have tried it and if it had worked, I wouldn't have changed to the Pelfrey. If you have the SSO and want 35's I would definitely try it!

What did you end up regearing to?

I went with 4.88's. I did that before I got the supercharger. If I were to do it again, knowing I was going to get a supercharger, I think I would go with 4.56's. My gas mileage is terrible, especially with my led foot. In reality it is only bad on the freeway going 85 MPH (or more). I have a tendency to drive to the trail faster than I should and back home even faster than that. If I were to keep it at 70 MPH and below, it would be fine.

Havik how do you like the baxter oil filter relocation kit? Isnt it messy with the filter up instead od down? I know it has a drip tray but doesnt a lot of oil come out of the filter?

I just ordered the Baxter adapter to spin on filter in stock location but havnt installed it yet. But I debated the relocation one like yours

I freakin' love it. My oil changes take about 10-15 minutes tops. Don't have to take skid plates off, or any extra work at all. I just toss the oil pan underneath, open the drain, remove the filter, throw a new one on, close the drain and fill her back up... done.

It isn't messy as long as you don't get over excited and take the filter off quickly. The trick is start loosening it until you break the seal. Then let it sit and drain (only takes an extra minute, if that). Then take it off. No spill, no mess, no fuss.

I am at those exact cross roads. I am getting ready to jump to 35x12.50 MT (34.5) tire and I am unsure how I want to regear. Still on the fence about a supercharger.

Here is the thing, and I know this isn't really going to help, the 4.88's are great! Without the supercharger, they were the only thing that really woke the 4Runner up after the big tires and all the weight. Before I re-geared, my truck had a lot of trouble with even the smallest hills. It would lose speed going up some highway inclines forcing me to either slow to below 60 or mash the throttle and be at much higher RPM (waste of gas). So if you are NA and going with 35 inch tires, I would say get 4.88s without a doubt.

If you are getting a supercharger, then you may not need 4.88s and 4.56s will be more than enough. That's not to say 4.88s are bad with a supercharger, but do waste more gas when cruising and of course make the interior louder at cruise. For me, I would choose 4.56s with the supercharger, just to get a bit more MPG on the highway and a little quieter ride. But that's just me, you may want the bigger gear for climbing obstacles, etc.

To be fair, I don't know what 4.56s feel like on a truck with 35s and a supercharger, maybe it won't be enough, so I can't say for sure. In other words, I am no help at all except to say 4.88s and a supercharger do work well with the taller tires.

...I also installed the Baxter Performance Oil Filter conversion/relocation kit:

Got details that you can share? Interested in the way that it mounts, lines/fittings required, and what happens w/the stock canister filter.

Thanks!

I used just the Baxter screw on adapter, took 30 seconds to install. Used a Napa Gold 1068 screw on filter.

One thing that has been debated with the remote setups is how much oil drains out of the filter when engine off allowing for more dry starts. I'm not sure if its an issue or not but figured I'd play it safe just using this adapter, still makes things quick and easy especially since the CBI skids have an access panel to the filter to change it

Eric,

I had a friend fab up the mount, but it was a simple sheet metal thing. You can use the one it came with if you find a good spot under hood. I have so many additional things under my hood, I didn't have a whole lot of space. You will need -10AN hoses and fittings. The stock canister adapter gets replaced, you don't use it anymore.
