On vacation here at Hawaii. Noticed a lot of Tacomas and 4Rs here on Oahu. Drove by a gated lot and thought it was a dealer's lot, it was the dept of agriculture's lot lol Even the police over here drive 4Rs, saw a 4th and 5th gen police 4Rs parked next to each other in China Town. Very true. Used to live there. Toyota, esp tacomas have always been trans of choice on the islands.

I was in Maui and Kauai last year for honeymoon, going back in three weeks for 1 year anniversary. Also noticed a ton of 4Rs and Tacos there.

Nothing too exciting, no mods or anything really, just a siren on top. The Tacomas there were modded more. There was a Hilux Surf though! Having a sun burnt wife doesn't really equate to patience for taking pics of other 4Rs Not all pics are 5th gens and in general, not a lot of 5th gens on the island, mostly 3rd and 4th gens.

This Hilux Surf must be someone's on this forum!

I'm going to necro this thread because I was about to post the same thing. I just got back from the Big Island and there were Toyotas everywhere. I've never seen so many 4Runners in one place.

Yes, it really was strange to see government officials driving 4Runners... Detroit has a lock on the government on the mainland (I presume that's somehow tax-related).

Anyway, it was awesome to behold. Volcanoes, natural beauty, 4Runners...

When I was at Maui a few years back I noticed the same thing. I swear every 4th vehicle out there was a toyota BOF of some sort. I also noticed alot of them had High Offset, small diameter wheels/tires. Very weird. Maybe one of our Hawaiian members can shed some light on this.

that's the look everyone goes for over there. i personally didn't care for it when i lived there and still don't, but they love it over there. tall lift, and then do everything in your power to make your tires stick out as absolutely far as possible from the body of the truck haha. but yeah, everyone drives toyota.

Yup that is a popular look over here. There ain't that many places to really wheel. Those trucks are mainly mall crawlers and the super wide tires do well in the sand (without having to air down) where most of our wheeling is done. Really sucks in the mud though.

Toyotas are crazy popular in Hawaii and they all come through one distributor/dealer, SERVCO. Servco actually is the dealer on most islands but on the big island (Hawaii), they are not but Big Island Toyota's vehicles all come from Servco. Pretty much no room to negotiate price but Servco is pretty good about not ripping you off blind. We don't get the "specials" like you guys but our "everyday low price" (Walmart) ain't that bad.:surfer:

Seen Runners used by police and highway construction workers. I even seen an FJ used as a construction vehicle over there.

On Hawaii Island (Big Island) there's lots of 4Runners and Tacos most of it are lifted too....The TE's if not all of them are lifted.
I heard there's an SR5 with a trail hood that's on a 6" FJ lift..I would like to see that in person...
Ford and Dodge are the trucks of choice for a diesel....

Lucky to live Aloha but not happy to pay for it...

Toyota 4runners, fj cruisers, sequoias, and camrys are all very popular patrol vehicles in Hawaii because they are reliable. There are some 4th gen 4runners out there that are still used for patrol that have almost 200,000 miles on them and the only repair work that was done on them were timing belt and water pump changes.

I lived on Oahu from 89-93' and it was the same back then; went back in 2003 and been going back just about every year since and they always are the same with the trucks. I like them; they are definitely "Hawaiian Style"!!
