Head Gasket Fix

Hey everyone I'm new to t4r.org ! I was so blessed today that my 01 4 runner's engine did not blow! I was just thinking the other day, hm its about time for an oil change! As i detailed my truck today I popped the hood & said let me check to see how dirty the oil is, and to my surprise there was not a drop of oil on the stick!!!!!! I called the guy who usually works on her and he just recently replaced the timing belt which was way over due, and he said it sounds like its the Head Gasket /0: I'm just curious on some feedback on the cost of this repair, hes checking on parts to estimate labor but I have to bring it in tomorrow to check it out & make a final determination. I'm a college student and I was just recently laid off last friday so I'm going crazy! Anyone ever have the same issue that can give me an idea of what I'm looking at? I was told 600- 1000 range. EEEEK! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Just got off the phone with the dealership and for my 95 its going to cost between 1500 and 2000. Better off to replace it myself and have the head checked to make sure its not warped.

these heads of get cracked after 175k miles. be careful on how much you dump into it.

The oil had to go somewhere. Either it was leaking into a cylinder and being burned (in which case you'd see it in the exhaust), or it was leaking out (in which case you'd see spots under the truck).
Before you jump into dumping a lot of money into it, fill the oil and drive it a few days. Keep checking the oil level, the exhaust (burning oil makes it blue-gray), and check for leaks. Have the compression checked.
Does the coolant look normal?
