Picked up the motor today! No problems with the shop crane getting the engine out of the pickup, that was actually fun. 
I'm thinking I'll start up a Engine Swap thread to try to document my experience, especially as a newbie. Should I just keep it to this thread or start a new one? I can't figure how to change a thread title.
I've seen a couple nice write ups here and elsewhere to get me started on what to do, but I'm sure I'll have some derpy derp moments you all can get a laugh out of.
Since the quote I got from the shop I like to repair the head gasket issue that started all this was $2,400, the goal is to stay under that, and probably under $2,000ish since I was told $2,400 was a high end price. Added challenge and fun!
Running expenses so far:
$1,512/1,212 for motor (1,400, 112 tax, 300 core charge I could get refunded if I don't keep the old motor to whack apart)
$65ish for uhaul pickup rental (probably derpy derp moment 1; guesstimated it would only be around 40)
$114ish for 1 ton shop crane (Harbor Freight sale for $149 with 25% off coupon on top)
Current total: $1689
I expect to spend at least another $300 in tools, probably a fair bit more. I'm likely going to have to do a "value adjustment" after all the work is done since the tools are something I could keep for a good while and get plenty of use out of as opposed to just for this job. Likewise, I could probably attempt to sell several of the pricier items I get on craigslist if I feel I want to recoup some more expenses.
EDIT: Leak down and compression test info I was given in writing:
7 to 10% leak down
Not sure they numbered the cylinders in their firing order so I'm going to write it as they did:
FRONT
2. 170 1. 171
4. 172 3. 175
6. 174 5. 169
