i too would be interested in this poll's results. But from what I've read over hte past year on this website, it seems like the head gasket issue mainly affects 03-05 4th gens, pre facelift

This would be a very good way to collect some data one where the majority of failures are occurring on the 4.0L V6
More data would be good. I have a feeling we'll see a lot of 2004's showing up. There are just so many variables, though.
There's probably more to think about than that. Sure would be nice to see pictures of some of the bad head gaskets and the mating surfaces on both sides. They might also shed some light on the subject.
- Service histories - spark plug changes, coolant changes, etc.
- Driving styles - how is the 4Runner used? Short commutes? Pulling heavy trailers?
- What environment the 4Runner lives in - it could be caused by large changes in temperatures causing the metal in the block or heads to expand and contract. Doesn't sound like a big deal but thousands of hot/cold cycles could eventually warp something.

mines an 04 havent done it yet im being lazy it only misfires in the am for about 30 sec then runs fine for the rest of the day its only gone through 1 qt of coolant in the last yr i know i gotta do it one of these days shes got 175000 on the clock. i bought it 2 yrs ago with 150000 with no service history. im an automotive tech at a toyota specialty shop so ill get to it eventually
Let's see some pictures of the failure when you do get around to it.

I'll try and take all the pics I can of the entire process. Maybe ill do a how to thread on the engine removal, teardown, and reassembly.

If this is such a widespread issue, I vote to make this poll a sticky so it's easy to find...
maybe even expand the poll just beyond years
models (sr5, sport, limited)
climate (warm year round, 4 seasons but not canada, Canada/ frigid conditions)
driving type (mostly highway, mostly short trips around town, mixed)
maybe even ask for VIN's (so we could see where and when the vehicle was manufactured to try and narrow it down, maybe it's not so widespread)
maybe even expand the poll just beyond years

my guess is many of those that had the problem here created an account, asked a head gasket problem, got it answered and never bothered to return to the forum.
probably only a fraction of the users with head gasket problems were/are regular members on the site

In reading the various posts on head gasket failures, I often wonder if the type of replacement coolant used makes a difference. Toyota has a specific coolant they recommend. If the coolant level is down and the wrong coolant is used to top it off, thus mixing the two, is it possible the head gasket could be compromised?
There have been thousands of GM V6 engines with DexCool (aka "DeathCool") where owners topped off with something other than DexCool and ended up with blown head gaskets shortly thereafter.

The Model shouldn't matter too much, because they all have the same engine model per year. It's not like the SR5 got non VVT-i one year and Sport and Limited did.
