Head lights stopped working suddenly

I went to cut on my head lights tonight and nothing, my corner lights cut on but no headlights. and the blue high beam light is on. I checked the bulbs, switched to old bulbs, checked fuses... Still nothing. So can someone please help. only when i hold down the switch for the high beams do they work. Please help or point me in the right direction.

This is why:
Red lines trace current flow while in High Beam
(First gen schematic here but I think second gen Runner headlight ckt works same way).

Control Concept:
When headlight relays come on 12V from headlight fuse go through low beam filaments, to terminal 1, to positive side of HB indicator (where all the R-G wires meet).
To turn on low beam, dimmer switch needs to connect one side of filament (terminal 1) to ground.
To turn on high beam, dimmer switch needs to connect term 2 to ground.

During normal operation:
Going to low beam grounds this point, turning high beam indicator off and since term1 is grounded Lo Beam turns on.

Going to high beam floats this point (term1 = pos side HB indicator = R-G wire), so 12V stays there, turning high beam indicator on. Since term2 is now grounded High Beam turns on.

Right now, on your rig:
"Blue high beam light is on", indicates that your dimmer switch is doing neither of the above.

The problem with many earlier model wiring is that these flimsy contacts are carrying high load currents so they'll arc and eventually get pitted/oxidized from all the arcing. Pitting and/or oxidation leads to high resistance leading to heat, leading to more oxidation.

Stock wiring also means your power runs from battery, to bulbs back to cabin to dash, back to engine compartment to fender ground. Long wire= lots of resistance = less power actually getting to your bulbs.

After you fix the dimmer switch, I recommend you look into the H4 Upgrade harness. This will make power go directly from battery to bulbs back to fender ground - a shorter loop, and no load current on your dimmer switch.

Low Range has this. Probably same concept and good price but not made for our classics (first-gens rule! :)).

There's also the Putco one on amazon, but it's got too many bad reviews.

I take pleasure in avoiding all that made in China crap, and want mine made with pride in my own garage in the U.S.A. - OOORAAH! :) so I'm making my own. I'm preparing for a move it might take a couple of weeks before I finish it.

There are posts on Yotatech on that harness but will post mine as-built when complete. :cheers:
 
I was talking about this: IPF Wiring Harness (M002). You're saying this is just straight power to the bulbs, with a relay triggered by 12v from the headlamp switch on the stalk?

Oh, I didn't see that... I see no mention of H4 connector that first-gens have, but yes, IF you can verify that it's for H4 connector, then that's it.

Current-carrying wire run will be much shorter than stock, because Relay will be very close to battery and bulbs. Current carrying wire does not have to go to cabin, to dash and back to engine compartment.

When I took voltage measurements on my stock wiring, approx. only 90% of batt voltage reaches the bulb.

That harness is designed for trucks that have converted to H4 buckets (like me!). I'll have to have a look and see if I'm up for building that harness myself, $80 is kinda steep.

Me, too. Got my AutoPal DOT's, but don't want to install them until I upgrade he harness. Yep, Steep. I'm sure you can get all parts you need for under $30. Some relays on amazon here:
