Final Write Up for JBL Head Unit Replacement
I'm just now looking into options for my 04 limited with JBL and nav. Seems like most options ruin the sound or drop features like the steering controls/backup cam? A brief write up of what you used and anything worth noting on install would be hugely helpful
Alright, sorry for the delay for this write up. Full time employment + 19 university credits + life + 4runner + hunting... doesn't leave time for much else. Anyway, I just finished my semester and have a few weeks to do some stuff!
To start off, I have a 2005 Limited 4runner with the JBL sound system, and RDS. Mine is a little different, it only has 7 speakers and a sub rather than the 9 speakers and a sub. Don't know why, but on the rear pillars I have mirrors rather than my 8th and 9th speakers.
I wanted a new head unit with bluetooth capability, and navigation. I came across Joying head units which had mixed reviews, but seemed like pretty cool units for the price. I bought the
"JOYING 7 Car Stereo 2GB 32GB Android 6.0 Head Unit Double Din" for around $300 and needed some additional hardware to get it to work with the JBL system. I started off looking at getting one interface for the JBL system, and a separate one for the steering wheel controls... but didn't like the idea of all of that clutter and added complication.

I ended up getting the
PAC RP4.2-TY11 Radiopro4 Ty11 for around $80 bucks which made the head unit work with the JBL system, and steering wheel controls.
On top of the head unit and interface I also ordered:
Rockford Fosgate Punch P1692 6 x 9-Inches Full Range Coaxial Speakers to replace my front speakers because one of them sounded like it was going out.
JOYING DVR Front Dash Cam in Car Video Audio Recorder 140° View Angle Dashboard Camera for JOYING New Android 5.1 & Android 6.0 Head Unit to tie into the head unit as a dash cam.
Metra 95-8202 Toyota DDIN Multi Dash Kit to make it look nice

SMAKN Dc/dc Converter 12v Step Down to 6V/3A Power Supply Module to get the factory backup camera to work with the new Joying head unit. Most aftermarket head units take a 6v camera, and factory cameras run at 12v. I also had to change the connector to a standard RCA, so I just cut the cable I purchased in half and spliced it into the factory connector.

Ai TOYK961 2003-2008 Toyota 4-Runner Dash Kit for the mounting brackets, but I ended up re-using the factory brackets. I did not use what I purchased, and you most likely shouldn't have to as long as you buy the metra kit, and have the factory brackets.

Scosche Mda-B Micro/Delco Antenna Adapter Tip to get the factory antenna to work. It required this to tie the two antennae together, and I also had to run a power wire to the antenna power from the factory set up.
And then just some soldering equipment and a lot of patience!

Alright, so for system I was not able to find anybody that makes a harness for everything, so I had to cut some wires. The PAC TY11 had harnesses for the main components, but for the backup camera, antenna power, and several others I had to improvise. I started off by splicing all of wires for the new head unit into the PAC TY11 harnesses. After I had it all set up I moved out to the vehicle, and cut any additional wires I needed and spliced those. There were some extra harnesses and wires from the factory head unit that I didn't need, so there are quite a few extra wires floating around back there. Once the head unit portion was all set up I spliced in the RCA cable, and reducer for the backup camera and was able to plug the RCA right into the head unit. For the antennas I just had to plug in the splitter and put the enlarger on the end of that, and then that plugged directly into the head unit. For mounting the head unit I used the factory brackets, but had to grind down a couple of dimples that were used to locate the placement on the factory unit. After trimming those down it sat flush on the Joying head unit and worked well with the Metra mounting kit. Once it was all plugged in how it was supposed to be I tested it out and everything worked fine after some minor adjustments. Fitting it all in the dash was a struggle, but after coiling some wiring and strategically placing some things I got it to work. Along with the rest of the install I also ran the wiring for the dash cam, microphone, and GPS antenna up to the area behind the rear view mirror.
All of this was installed in August, and it worked great until November. In November I started having issues with the audio cutting out randomly when using bluetooth. It turned out that I had to update the firmware on the head unit and that it was just a bug. Well after updating it the screen on the head unit stopped working. It is just dead. So I have been back and forth with Joying support in China via email trying to understand their engrish. I could rant about my experience with their support for hours.... but lets just say I am trying to get a refund, and not a replacement, and I will be replacing that head unit with a head unit I can get some real support and a good warranty on.
I'm open to any suggestions on head units that have bluetooth capability, backup camera, other camera inputs, GPS, and can support android if possible. I would like to run the Torque app on it for on screen diagnostics with my bluetooth OBDII reader.
