Headlight polish

My headlights had a couple places where the lense was getting "foggy" or dirty. I know they sell polishing kits, but I wanted to try what I already had at home. I have had a bottle of 1500 grit toyota buffing compound for years. I used a shop towl and buffed out all the imperfections came right out! I finished up w/ a quick buff with NuFinish and my lenses are good as new!

I've used that material, and like av8or says it works very well. However it should be mentioned that's primarily for lights that aren't too bad yet. If your light shields are showing any significant to heavy amount of oxidation sanding or some very abrasive material will probably be necessary first.

I'm looking at installing the protective film Weathertech sells for headlights. I have questions, I have a 2008 4Runner and 2002 Tacoma The lenses on the Tacoma are clouding some, if I polish the clouding out of the lenses will the film prevent further clouding or will it just make polishing further clouding off impossible?
Also before I put it on both vehicles has anyone used this product is it worthwhile? Thanks!

Should protect it very well. Go ahead and buff/polish to clean the lenses up, then you can degrease and put the protectors on. Should be fine and keep from further breakdown.
 
This yellowing of the plastic lenses happened to me (on other cars/SUVs). Wet sanding and buffing it with whatever compound seems to work. However, my experience is that the yellowing comes back rather quick. This is due to the fact that the protective coating is gone, especially after wet sanding it. I see that after wet sanding/polishing, a few coats of good wax is imperative to help "sort of compensate" for the lack of that protective coating.

The only REAL fix is to replace the lense, but that would be price restrictive.

make sure to put wax/seal the headlights once you are done wetsanding/polishing. No yellowing will come back.
