Heater/AC Control Options

I've been looking at the different options Toyota offered in the 1st Gen 4Runner. Specifically, in the 87 year model. Is anyone able to tell me the difference between these two heater/ac control options (arrows vs vent/bi-level, etc)? I've seen both on 87 SR5 4Runners, but what does one have that the other doesn't?

the first has an intermediate "defroster/heater" position, to deflect some air to the windshield and the floor (this is the version i have in my 87).

i don't know if the second has the intermediate position. it doesn't show it.
 
Yeah, I noticed that. I would think there would be more to it though. It doesn't seem like Toyota would offer two options with that being the only difference. Surely there is an expert around here that knows the difference. I would look in an owners manual to see if it offered any info, but I don't have one.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

I believe that the upper is the factory face plate for 87 the other is an earlier version and is the same and does the same. As the controls in our trucks are cable actuated not electric as in the newer trucks. The top just shows that you can put it in between and divert air both ways. The only reason I can give for words on one and arrows on the other is that the world is producing more stupid people who can't read so hence arrows. IMO
 
Thanks for all of the comments. I'm not convinced the top one is the factory plate for 87 as I've seen a lot of 87s with the bottom plate. Maybe the bottom plate was used with 4runners without factory AC... or maybe early 87 models used the bottom plate and Toyota changed it with the later 87 models.

Not sure why I'm stuck on knowing the answer to this since it's just a minor detail. Maybe I'll find an 87 owners manual and see what it shows.

My 87 has A/C and that bottom plate.

Hard to see in this pic, but the A/C switch is in the same spot.
