Hello i am new to the forums so go easy one me...... In sep of 2013 i bought a 1997 evergreen pearl SR5 4x4 V6 3rd gen 4runner with 229,000 miles for a killer deal of $800 bucks! it needs some work to be road ready so any elder advice for a newblet would be greatly appreciated. I have learned so much from you guys on T4R already it is my first vehicle and i am working on getting it winter/road ready. I bought her on craigslist cheap because the drivers side rear control arm bracket was broken from the frame, i had that repaired at a local frame shop for $125. It needs new brakes oil change plug wires yada yada yada. Again any good advice from someone that knows more then me would be appreciated

Nothing big really, just a bunch of maintenance stuff. The guy i bought it from was a doctor or something and just wanted it out of his yard plus he did not know a THING about cars

Honestly the pic is the worst part, no big rust holes or anything. I think its in great shape considering it been in Michigan for 10+ years

Spray the undercarriage of it. They make stuff meant to stave away rust and help protect already rusted spots. Especially living with salted roads and winter coming.. But congrats! If I found a 4runner for 800 bucks, i'd be there cash in hand tonight.

Wow. That's cheap. I'm assuming they had to drop the fuel tank. It looked like the break and rust was pretty far up the backside of the frame. Kudos, man.

Actually they slid the tank over a little bit and yes it was up the back side of the frame so he wielded a 1/4 steel plate to it. I think the repair side is stronger then the other side

POR-15 is what the stuff is called. They also make an etching compound to use. Haven't used it myself, but there are a few good threads on it, and from what I've seen it came out nice on theirs rigs.

Wow! That's a lot of rust! But for under $1000 after getting that fixed? You can't beat that.

Defiantly get all the rust taken care of. These frames are not very thick as it is, nothing rust can't easily eat through.

Also something quite ironic that i forgot to note is that the build date on my 4runner is july of 97 and i was born july of 97! :guitar3:
