HELP! 2015 TRD PRO NO START= TuRD?!

I'm not buying this.

The OP said the fuel light had just came on. Not that he ran out of gas. I've owned 3 4runners ( an 87, a 99 & 11) I routinely run them down until the fuel light comes on. Sometimes even drive another 15-20 miles after the light comes on. Never had one fail yet. I just don't think that running it until the light comes on means the pump is running dry.

Of course that doesn't mean it's not the pump, I just have a different experience that's all.

BTW, the 99 4Runner had over 220k on it when I traded it in, the 99 has 180k on it now and my 11 has almost 90k. my last fill up was over 21 gallons....on our 23 gallon tank

Coworker and I had two work vans that rolled off the assembly line two numbers different on the last digit of the Vin. His fuel pickup line was slightly different than mine. His low fuel light meant 2 miles. Mine meant about 35miles. There were other differences too.

OP gas cap could be causing excessive vacuum not normally a big deal until empty? Slight variation with in tank fuel indicator. Most likely the OP had a partial load of bad fuel w/water that would make no difference unless driven until mostly empty. I rarely let any vehicle reach 1/4 tank. Learned my lesson as a teenager. My vehicles are now too heavy to push. My 81' Mazda was light enough to push when out of fuel or I sucked water into the pump or filter.

Interesting.....What make Dodge? Ford?

UPDATE!!!

My mechanic had my vehicle for two days. He has done the following:
Started it cold. Shut it off. Restarted it 10 times. No issue.

Drove it for 10 miles various speeds, slow, reverse, floored it, parked it back at his shop. Let it rest 1 minute. Restarted it just fine.

Let it cool down and tried it 6 hours later. Started up no problem.

Let it sit all night, started it up no problem this morning.

His wife (don't worry, she's a badass!) took it for a an hour drive (30 out and back) city/hwy roads and ran great. Let it cool down again and resarted just fine

He drove it on his off-road coarse behind his shop and needed to use 4wd to get through mud/hills, rocks, etc... Stopped it and restarted it on an uphill and down hill. No issues.

Let it sit for 5 hours. I picked it up tonight and it started just fine.

He's ordering a new fuel pump just in case we need it and we'll put it in just so we can inspect the other one.

We are just baffled at this point.

Thanks for all of the thoughts and ideas. Keep them coming and I'll keep you posted!

Have you ever replaced the battery in your key? I've heard of this causing strange events.

Started on third turn of key today.... drove it 15 minutes. parked it for 3 hours. Wouldn't start.

Do cam positions sensor failures send codes?

May be a relay, a fuel pump, or another main relay.
When rotating the starter the normal revs are either starting or running slowly.
If a sensor is more likely to be on the crankshaft.
These are just ideas

A scantool read during attempted start/crank the revs were low.
One relay under the hood "clicked" each time I turned the key to position #2.
The fuel pump didn't always sound like it "primed"?

Thanks for the ideas.

The relay of the fuel pump should be the same as any other in the box, so just change the sample locations by remembering where it was.
If this does not help while attempting to burn electricity from another car with cables to make sure the accumulator is not defective.

Too much inconsistent behavior.

Sounds like damn rodents to me!

Just nicked a wire that's intermittently shorting and it could very well be the fuel pump wire harness.

It really resembles an electrical problem.
A cable problem is also very probable.
But the man says that they have changed the fuel pump, I'm afraid that before they change it they have looked around the cables they are visible and are on the chassis.
At least here we are doing so when there is a similar problem before we change the first inspect the cables.

We ordered a fuel pump but it has yet to be installed yet.
We will be checking EVERY wire and connection for certain.

After re-reading this the only thing I can think is fuel filtration or fuel venting system. Vapor lock perhaps. Could there be moisture in the bottom of the tank? I suppose a fuel drying agent in the tank wouldn't hurt.

UPDATE:wtf:

Had the truck from my mechanic after he couldn't reproduce the issue.

I drove it one damn time 10 minutes. Parked it for 2 hours. Went out to start it and it wouldn't start:doh:

Tried it for 3 days at various times. Tried shaking the truck, hitting the tank, unplugging the battery, etc...

Not once did it start.

Finally gave in and had it towed to my mechanic's place. He looked at it the following day and it started right up :wtf:

We replaced the fuel pump. He used it for 2 days and never had an issue.

I picked it up this morning, drove home 5 miles, parked it all day. Went to start it and it didn't start:wtf:

It took 4 attempts and it finally started. I drove to NAPA and picked up a fuel pump relay (left it running). Drove home and parked it in the garage. It has started just fine now a few times over the last couple hours. I can't find which damn relay is the fuel pump one. It doesn't say in the manual, and it sure as hell doesn't say on the fuse box cover anywhere.

#1. Which one is the fuel pump relay?
#2. What's this I've been reading online about a fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump module? Would this be a potential issue? Where is it and how hard is it to replace and how $$?
#3. Who wants to buy a sweet 4Runner for low $$?

No codes and the only one who can't start it is me so I think whoever buys it will be just fine.

Is everyone using the same key?

Also when you park it and can't start it, is there any network, radio, or any other such transmission that could be interfering with your key trying to communicate with the truck. Your phone? Anything.

I know that's a stretch, but the next time it happens try to turn off all electronics that may be near. The only thing I can imagine that would always be around and specific to you would be your phone though.

That is one bizarre situation.
