Help! Check Engine, VRC TRAC and VRC Off lights came on?

So my 2005 limited 4wd is running fine, I wake up the next morning to go to work and the Check Engine, VRC TRAC and VRC Off lights are on.

Nothing has changed..... The truck is runnign fine and I can't figure out why these lights came on.

Should I take it to the dealership?

Check your tire pressure. A very low tire will set these off.
 
Gas cap....

What's important to note is any CEL will trigger the rest of the lights. Part of VSC functionality is to control the engine output (while in a skid). If the CEL is on the system "assumes" it may not have proper control of the engine throttle/output and it shuts down VSC & Trac which trips the remaining lights.

Had the same problem with my 04. Ended up being a bad catalytic converter. No clue why all those lights come on. Replaced under factory warranty and have not had a problem since.

its not allways the gas cap...could be anything. if you can pull a code and post it i can give you an idea of whats wrong. stop by an autozone and they can pull a code for ya free of charge...might not help ya much but you can post the code and ill see what it refers to and give you an idea of what it coule be.

Very true and great advice. My point is check the gas cap and understand that it is probably the CEL that caused the other lights to light.:D
 
I've had my VSC OFF Light, Skid Light, Brake! Light, ABS Light, and VSC Trac lights all on since February and have had no issues what so ever driving. They all went on and off for a while and after doing the zero-point calibration with some speaker wire they went out shortly, but then came on for good and then I just gave up. There are no issues when driving. I need an inspection so now I am going to get it looked at and my mechanic is going to do what ever he needs to make it pass inspection, which may mean a new O2 sensor, new wirings, who knows. But although all the lights are on and have been on, there has been no difference or issues while driving with them on. If you can just ignore the lights and drive then you could save some money for a while. Thats what I did.
 
it could be one of the oxygen sensors. Only way to know is to have the dealer hook it up to the computer.
 
My check, engine, vsc trac, vsc off lights are on. 2007 4WD. I installed the Progressive Insurance Snapshot device on my OBD connector a week ago. Could this cause the problem?
 
i got the CEL, vsc trac, vsc off lights on. Just came on while driving, nothing i did or happen that I know of. I did wash the truck, and hit a pothole (impossible not to up here)
 
Check your gas cap is tight ...Then Take the Postive Cable off the battery for about ten minutes it will reset the computer and then see if your lights stay off.
 
Vsc 2004 Runner

I had the same problem after filling up and noticed the Vsc On and off light was on. 2004 V8 4-Runner
My gas cap never sealed right, clicks to the right but never tightened.
That was the problem, I bought a new one and reset the computer by unhooking my battery for a few minutes thus clearing the computer.
Hooked the battery up and started the engine and lights were gone.

Unhooking the battery means resetting your clock and radio stations

If it was one of the 4 sensors that were bad the light would come back on.
If a light comes on after unhooking the battery you need to bring it to someone with a code reader. Toyota charges about $400.00 for each sensor and there are 4. They are easy to change and can be bought for a fraction of what Toyota wants for them on line.
When the gas cap doesn't seal the system doesn't pressure up and a VSC light comes on, this is what Toyota told me.
It worked for me!
 
mine did that and the dealer replaced the battery but the lights came back on the next day. They then replaced 2 O2 sensors and that did the trick. This was back in
feb 2011. No probs since.

I agree with the fact that most codes that set a MIL are often not serious enough to cause harm to the vehicle, you don't always want to assume that it won't. For example another member has a thread on a P2714 code, which relates to a transmission solenoid. He at first mistook the symptom as drive line clunk. Had he taken your advice and not gotten it checked out, he could have driven his 4Runner until the transmission prematurely cooked itself alive.

Not bashing on, just trying to inform that just because the majority of codes and MIL being on are often simplier to ignore, does not mean you shouldn't be cautious.

No, it is an OBDII (Onboard Diagnostics Generation II) vehicle, there is a standard set of programming in terms of the way codes are read.

You could probably even go to Kragens and have them pull the codes.
 
Well...I removed the Progressive Snapshot device and then disconnected the battery for a few minutes and reconnected. The lights are off now...at least for a trip around the block. We'll see if they stay off now. This is something the Progressive and Toyota dealer people should be made aware of. At least I can cancel my dealer appt now.

but in another thread, it was noted that plugging an aftermarket (non-toyota) scanner will cause vsc lights to come on...
