help deciding on xreas replacement

most of the posts I read guys are lifting or doing off road suspensions, I want to go with stock height not looking to put bigger tires or go off roading, my runner came with 18" rims and happy with them for now. If anything if the front shocks get closer to level so the rake is minimal would be a bonus. What shocks did you replace the xreas with? I am thinking oem springs for rear but not sure what to get for fronts I do not want a super stiff ride. as close of a ride to when truck was new is what I looking for, a little stiffer would be ok.

& check out the "xreas delete" on bluesky07 link, was very helpful when i removed xreas & installed the KYB shocks... & i also watched some youtube videos of whats involved. if you have basic tools & mechanical abilities its really very easy to remove the factory shocks & install new ones. just be sure you buy the correct 4wd or 2wd for what 4runner you have.

I was thinking of doing it myself till I saw how much rust I have around the shock mount bolts and lower control arm. If I run into problems I dont have the experience or the tools to attempt to fix whatever issues I run into, so I will be bringing it to local shop for them to do the work but I will be suppling the parts.

What I used, ordered new, on my '03 V8:
FJ springs, rear: 48231-35321
FJ springs, front: 48131-35541 and 48131-35551
with Bil 4600 and new KYB upper mounts and a 1" level spacer in front.

the KYB complete front coil over shocks are direct bolt in, there is no need to modify anything, they bolt right in in place of the originals & include new springs pre installed. if you have xreas the shop just wont be connecting the fluid lines. if they wont remove the lines you can do that very easy after install.

as for springs, if yours arent sagging or were abused with off roading or heavy towing you dont need new rear springs, the factory ones are perfectly fine for the street driving you said this will be for. some guys buy FJ springs for added lift but it doesnt sound like you want or need that, stick with the factory rear springs or buy OEM new ones for a 4runner, moog are the best OEM replacement.

your parts list has KYB mount kit... thats not needed when you buy the complete shock/spring, they come with the mount kit pre installed. look at rock auto or even amazon, they will show you the part# for the front L&R complete shocks/springs & the rear shocks. thats all you need unless you want/need to replace the rear springs & chances are you dont. i replaced fronts & rears & kept the stock rear springs with 140k miles on them, the rear sits nice & tall just like when new, rear springs dont go bad at ~150k miles & unless you want more lift or off roading you dont need FJ or any other aftermarket spring.

try searching for the complete front shock/spring assembly for a 2008 4runner, if you cant find teh part# i can post them or another member can.... keep it simple for simple on road use, no need to pay more for things that arent needed.

EDIT: looks like rock auto is out of the 4WD kyb front shocks/springs & other places are back ordered as is the case with many auto parts right now due to the virus crap. but i did find a couple places that have them on a google search, shock surplus looks to have all 4 as a set & summit has individuals with a couple weeks out for ship date. call around to the places on this search & see what you can find. also the shock surplus link shows the complete front set up i mentioned, no mount kit is needed for these.

I don't know for certain but as I understand it, the KYB setup is essentially equivalent to stock so you may not get much lift up front. Hopefully someone with this gear installed will answer definitively.

youre very welcome & sorry for the late reply. i have posted before about the lift KYBs provide, it is about 1-2" over stock height in the front due to the fact that the KYB shocks & springs are ~10% stiffer/firmer than the original stock shocks/springs. when i first installed mine it was more like 2.5" above stock but it settled down after about 50-100 miles & now sits as shown in this pic, definitely an easy 1-1.5" lift up front & it has stayed there for 2 years & thousands of miles now.

heres another pic showing how it sat when i bought it with 140k miles & original but not leaking XREAS, im using 265/70 tires that are one size above stock height but same width, no rubing at all. im very happy with the height & ride quality of the KYB, if i need it any higher i can buy the lift spacers but i have no need for that as this 4runner is not used for off roading, just a nice daily driver with some light utility use & towing.
