Help Diagnosing Clunk When Turning

Hi everyone,

First thread- just wanted to say that this forum was probably the reason I decided to go with a 4runner. It is a great resource and I enjoy checking out everyone's rigs.

I purchased a 2015 2wd 4runner in May of 2015 and have not had any issues with it until about a month ago. I'm noticing a strange creak/clunking noise when turning left with articulation coming from what I think to be the front drivers side. Due to it only happening with articulation, I'm thinking this could be a strut mount? I've read through multiple threads, and the only similar issue I can find relates to Trail Models with KDSS, however I don't have KDSS as it's an SR5. The truck is stock except for the 2013 trail running boards I added about a year ago.

I've taken it to the dealer twice now, but it seems to be very intermittent and hard to replicate on certain days. In the video below it is about the loudest I have experienced it. Let me know if you guys have any input as to what it could be.

I have an annoying sound from the same area. I've had it since 15k and I'm now on 55k. I think its from the skid plates touching each other.

Start grabbing things and seeing if they are loose. Shocks, a-arms, sway bar...ect. Something is worn or loose. Shake, shake, shake...
 
I had a similar noise that would only happen while turning left over uneven pavement. I spent an entire Saturday going over everything in the front end but everything was tight, and at 65,000 miles nothing looked worn. Finally took it to the dealership. I had the technician ride with me to make sure he heard the noise. They kept it most of the day and also checked everything, but couldn't find the problem. Finally late in the day I got a call saying that it was a simple fix....turns out the left front rubber bump stop that the hood rests on was out of adjustment! All they had to do was adjust it so it yielded a little more pressure on the hood when closed! 5,000 miles later the noise is still gone.....

Thanks for the response, I'll check that out this evening and hopefully that will be the fix! With 29k on the odometer i'm hoping it isn't a suspension component.

Im going to check this too as i too have the same symptoms when turning left on uneven roads.

Had the same issue. Discovered that the alignment shop did not tighten to torque specs it's something insane like 175 ft/lbs mine was less than 100. Took it back they corrected and no more issue

So i just came back from adjusting this little rubber bump stop and guess what.....no more noises!!!

Adjusted my hood bump stop and no more noise, glad to *hopefully* be done with that. It was driving me insane!

This is a useful tip... We need a sticky of things to check as some of these noises are difficult to find.

Did you adjust them up? To gain better contact w the hood? I too have been harassed with this noise
 
This is useful information!

I'm currently trying to determine the cause of my "clunk" when reversing at a slow speed and at full lock of the steering wheel to left. Any ideas?

I 2nd this!
Things I've checked and or tried to eliminate my pesky noise

-Fender/engine skirt clips, removed and put double sided tape then pushed pins back in place
- removed sway bar relocate and lubed sway bar bushings
-removed center caps on wheels
-used silicone on the frame rail cover caps that slide back n forth(that one was a long shot)
-zipp tied and DST the wire connector under the windshield cowel
-tightened battery tray
-was tempted to put silicone on the bolts that "hold" the exhaust shield on the drivers side near the firewall-
-checked radiator cover for cause of noise
- lubed lca bushings

None of these things 100% made the noise go away

When I tightened the battery tray I pondered if the hood stops could be the cause, I can only hope!!
