Help doing FJ springs shocks today cant tell R/L ?!!!

I'm doing my fj springs and shocks to day and the fronts came still put together and see no part # and they both have 8 coils and because there still together they are the same length one has green/grey paint and the other has green yellow. Any help would be great i'm sure if they were not still assembled one spring would be taller but when they are still together I can't see any diff.

mine has yellow on the driver's side. If they are still put together your probably won't notice a height difference

That's what sux they are the same Height. And they look to me side by side to have the same # of coils. I have been stairing at them for a hour now and one side the coils looks to be thicker but that might be my eyes playing tricks on me.

I just read a couple of old threads and saw a couple of pics and it seems one of the front springs should have one more coil than the other and mine do not! WTF! If i line them up they start and spop at the same spot with the same # of coils.

Mine are green/orange on the drivers side, green/gray on the passengers. I think it's the rear that has different numbers of coils, as my fronts have the same number, one spring is just slightly taller than the other (less than 1/2" difference, but believe me, it's a big difference once installed).

From another thread, and the colors match what you're listing.

thanks swamp rider and gatorose. It's weird I saw pics on another thread and one front spring had one more coil. I wounder if I'll have to take my fronts a part to tell for sure because when they are together they are the same. Sux I dont want to put it together and then have to take it all a part and redo it.

Take both assemblies and set them next to each other... Next get some large sockets and pick the biggest one that will fit in the spring about midway up (without deforming the spring). Now go to the other one with the same socket. Is it tighter or looser? The spring assembly with the smallest gap is the longer spring and should go on the drivers side.


Think about gapping spark-plugs... I have chosen large sockets (or similar) to measure the gap. The shocks are the same length therefore the the longer spring will have a slightly smaller gap.

In fact, based on photo's of assembled struts, you can see it. There isn't a full extra turn of spring but there is enough more that when assembled it's viewable...

Thanks Chris is one spring thicker bar stock? One looks thicker. I will take a pic later so you can see what I'm dealing with. They are so close to each other as I measure the gap as i go up each coil one side will be closer together then the next ciol on the other spring will be closer together.

Thanks Chris is one spring thicker bar stock? One looks thicker. It's not thicker (to my knowledge) but I think you're 'on it'. I suspect the 'thicker' that you're seeing is an illusion caused by the slightly reduced tell-tale spacing.I will take a pic later so you can see what I'm dealing with. I was trying suggest measuring the gap at a specified distance above the bottom spring mount. I know I didn't write that very clearly:bash:

Thats what i think but two other people in other threads used the green/yellow on the divers.??????????

The thing I don't get how some of the posts I've read people say put the longest one on the drivers side but when they are allready put together there is not a longer one because both the shocks are fully extended. It does not matter what spring you have because the shock only extends so far thats why when I measure them there are the same length. So do i have to take them a part to find out for sure?

Might just be my imagination, but from the picture it looks like where the springs start on the bottom are lined up, and on the top the right one is just a tad longer, i just received some FJ springs and shocks and the yellow/gray is just about 1/4 inch longer if you measure from upper pearch to end of spring. So that would go along with what others are saying that yellow/green are drivers and gray/green is passenger

Are yours still together? Mine measure 13 3/8 from the top of the perch top the bottom of the plate the spring ride on. Both are the same.

Mine are still together, but the more i look the more they look similar, might of just been the way they rolled. I think you should put them on and let me know how it turned out so i know how to install when i do it in a couple of weeks..... All I can say is it seems other people have did it before with yellow or orange on drivers and gray on passenger and it worked for them.

I'm tellin ya you can not tell a diff when they are together I'll have to guess. Hope I don't have to do it twice! Or maybe I should get a spring compressor and take them apart then I should be able to witch one is taller. Pain in the ass and I want to get it done! I have had my rears done for a week.

All I can say is it seems other people have did it before with yellow or orange on drivers and gray on passenger and it worked for them.

I just put on my springs about a week ago with yellow for drivers, and grey for passenger side. It looks great. I'll get pics up soon.
