help me decide: 16" or 17" wheel

hey guys,

I am lifting my 04Runner with Toytec 3/2 lift this week and I am trying to decide on a wheel size.

I plan to run a AT tire either 285/70R17 or 285/75/16....which is the most common wheel size for the 4th gen? Stock my SR5 has 17" wheels but the 16" should clear the brakes (I don't have the larger brakes).

The 16" wheel seems to look better with more sidewall on an AT? Tires are cheaper for the 16" wheel....

Would the 17" wheel handle better? Less Weight?

What do MOST people run? Opinions?

Never heard of a 285/16R16. I know that this was probably a typo, but what size were you actually referring to for a 16" rim? Typically, the lower the profile sidewall, the better on-road handling you will get but worse off-road handling, and vice-verse for higher profile tires. Now, that being said, if it were my T4R, I would stick with the rim diameter that came stock.

Fixed the typo!! Doh! Kids were distracting me. So is there really that much difference? I'm looking at a 16x8 vs 17x8.5 orv17x9...something like the black rock Yuma or Mickey Thomson Classic 3...

Well, the dimensions are all relative. But when I was asking about "size", I was referring to the "typo" tire for the 16" rim. So, you are asking about the difference between a 285 70 17 vs. 285 75 16? These sizes both have 33" diameters, but the 70's have a half inch lower profile. Unless you are AJ Foyt, (yes, I understand this dates me) you probably will not notice much difference in on road handling vs. the 75's. The 75's will provide for a little bit more cushioned ride. But again, if your Runner came stock with 17" wheels, I would not move to the smaller ones.

Keep 17"s so you can do the Tundra upgrade next time you do rotors.

Wheels don't help you corner, tires do. Pick a less aggressive tire for better street performance.

Gotta admit, I LOVE these tires over my buddies BFG ATs. They are super quiet and have a great look to them.

Just a couple quick ones after I got the alignment done. The UCAs really make it stable at high speeds. Really the drive isn't much different from stock. I will post better pictures in the lifted sticky this weekend after I wash it.
