Help me decide between 265 70 17 and 275 70 17

As the title says, I'm trying to choose between 265 70 17 and 275 70 17.

I'm currently running the TRD Pro lift with a 1/4" top plate spacer. I have about a 2.5 inch lift all around. I'm also running stock SR5 wheels with no spidertrax.

Has anyone tried fitting 275s with a 2.5 inch lift. I've search around and haven't come across a definitive answer.

According to the Suspension Guide I feel like I'm teetering right at the edge of being able to fit these wheels. If I can, I'd love to run them. But I'm also not thrilled about having to do a body mount chop or deal with constant rubbing, which would lead me to running the 265s.

,stock wheels are +25 offset. I think fj wheels and gen 5 trail wheels are +10 offset. Meaning they will sti k out more and gi e you more clearance. I am installing 285/70/17s this weekend on ri.s that are 0 offset with a 2.5" lift. I 3xp3ct to clear them fine.

The other big thing to consider is that almost no 275 tire comes in load range C. They are all E load range. So if this matters to you 275 may not be for you.

I'm not too familiar with tire offset. Would I have any rubbing issues without spacers? Running spidertrax is certainly an option I'd consider.

I'm not too concerned about the load rating.

Do you have the V8 or V6? I ask as the V8 has a different hitch which doesn’t allow the 275/70/17 spare tire to fit in spare location: conflict with panhard bar. Also, there are not many C rated options in this size. For those 2 reasons I opted for the 265/70/17 and I have no rubbing issues either.

Thanks that's good info. I have the V6, so I'm guessing the spare should fit. And I'm not too concerned about load rating.

My 2006 4runner is running BFG KO2 275/70/17 on TRD Pro Rims with the OME BP-51 lift at about 2.5" Had to remove the Front Mud flaps but so far no rubbing with about 5k on the setup.

I was in the same boat for the past 6 months but decided to stick with 265 since there are so few options in 275 and load range/tire weight is something I was factoring in. Wasn't worth going to load range E for the slight size increase for me. I drive a vehicle at work that has load range E BFG KO2's and the noise/ride quality is way too harsh in my opinion.

Looks like my stock SR5 wheels have a 30mm offset and TRD wheels have a 4 mm offset.

Spidertrax push my wheels out 1.25" (32 mm), and would get me close to the TRD offset.

Will I need the spacers if I want to go with the 275s?

Update. Just bought a set of spidertrax off craigslist.

Hoping this solves my (potential) clearance issues if I go with 275s... But still on the fence about committing to them.

Now that you got 'em try 'em. Just be sure to follow all of the torque and 20 Mile tighten up procedures.

I was working with Slee Offroad when I built mine out. The TRD Pro rims were a a very last minute add on. (IE: Morning of the build!) Looking over my original quote I was going to go to the 275's with no spacers on my original 17" sport rims. It sounded like there would need to be a bit more work to do checking clearances at full turn and full compression with the stock rims. The Slee mechanics did not seam concerned about doing it.

In the end I'm going to need tires on my 97 Tacoma this fall so I just bought the rims since I already had nearly new tires on the 4runner. This way I can just swap the good tires/rims to the Taco after the suspension and alignment are finished. This will let me do the Tundra Brake swap next time I do the brakes too http://www.toyota-4runner.org/images/smilies/smile.gif

Lots of good info here. I'm starting to feel better about the 275s!

255/75r17

Have you considered 255/75R17? I was considering the same size tires as you, now I am trying to decide between 255/75R17 and 265/70R17. 255/75R17 is a fairly common tire and is about the same diameter as the 275/70R17.

Totally valid point. I know it's less than an inch difference kn width, but I cant get over the fact that they look like wagon wheels.

I do prefer the wider look of the 275s. And I feel like I've got enough clearance to squeeze them in...

I just picked up a 255/75-17 (OEM jeep tire) to use as a spare for my 285/70-17s, fits the spare tire location.

It's a smaller tire, but not by much.

Folks say its looks like a wagon wheel/pizza cutter.
I say go to a local tire place and line the different sizes up side by side, and see for yourself.

If I had a V6, I would consider the 255/75-17. But I went with the 285s (on Zero offset wheels) to go with the V8.

As for load ratings, the E series is said to give a much stiffer ride..

Good Luck!

Yeah, I definitely don't want to go with 285s. In my mind, the 275s have always been a happy middle ground.

I have spidertrax, so my actual offset with stock SR5 wheels should essentially be zero (I think?).

You bring up a good point about engine size/tire mass.

I've really come around to the 255/75-17 tires.

Hoping I can grab a set of KO2 through costco at some point.

And I believe this should fit in the spare location, especially given I have a v6.
