Help me with a 4Runner choice

Hey Flyer, You need to read this article! I did before buying mine new and got it for sticker price @ 2.9% with only 3K down. I found the one I wanted through the stealerships on-line inventory and called their Fleet sales department before even going to the lot.
It helps also if you get pre-approved for a loan and make the dealership beat it.

i told you there are great deals to be had. and if you find one far away shipping a car isnt so bad especially if you found the "PERFECT" one. also another up is that most of the V8 4wd with 100k miles have been owned by either an old person that just drove it and didnt even know what the "4 W D" on the side meant. haha or a person who could have cared less it was 4wd and the vehicle itself has never seen dirt, especially the ones in the south east. usually when i see a V8 4wd its driven by an older lady and prob a mom. pi$$es me off haha cause the only action those things have seen is crawling a curb.
I'll definitely look around and follow old people driving V8 4Runners from now on. If they stop, I'll make an offer.
Seriously though, I will look on CL and cars.com and go to the dealerships and see what deals I can work. I don't get emotionally attached at dealerships and I know all the games of the salesmen and F&I guys. I just detest going in.

sounds good and also depending on the year xterra you were looking at, if your planning on lifting it the older ones i think 1st gens have only 2'' lifts available to buy cause they have torsion bars and not coilovers and the newer ones are very expensive. go with the 4runner for sure.

hellz yea man! well if you want all the mods you stated you need to find that steal of a deal on an 03 or 04 for like 11k liked the ones i showed you. good luck man. also where are you located?
4th Gen prices
I'm a big fan of Autotrader - I just bought my 1st 4th Gen - '05 SR5 4wd, V8, Salsa Red w/ 80K, never wrecked, all maintenance records, etc for $15,000. There is a catch - I drove my Tacoma 1100 miles to Houston to get it. For what its worth, I'm only about 100 miles from you, up in the mountains. Anyway, for at least $5000 less than our local market, it was worth it. Keep looking, and good luck.... Oh, and BTW, I'm in towing/recovery for a living - good choice on foregoing the Xterra. They tend to spend alot of time on the back of tow trucks....

Good point, and I'd be willing to drive or even fly somewhere to get a good deal. I have friends in Kansas City and family in DC and San Antonio too so free lodging anywhere around there. I'll check Autotrader too. Been to Vail a few times- sweet place but crazy money needed to live there.

I prefer autotrader over cars.com. I just like the layout better and the design of the website. I also like how you save a list of favorites that you might want to go back and look at better than the way cars.com does it. However, when I am searching, I used cars.com, autotrader, craigslist, vehix.com, and local papers.
I had good luck finding mine about 1.5 years ago. The prices were down due to gas prices so high, and mine is now worth more than I paid for it, which helps since I took a bath when selling my Sequoia at the same time.
Good luck with the search. I spent about two months and found two that I liked. I would up with an 03 V6 Sport 4wd, with 56k miles and paid 13,500. It's worth about 16k now with 72k miles on it in my area based on what I am seeing them sell for.

I think prices may be up a bit. I bought my 2004 2WD with 41,000 miles in 2008 from a private seller for $12,000. I now have 64,000 and is running great. Of course my 2001 is running great too, so I guess no surprise there.
I don't think my car is worth more, but I probably don't have to take a big loss if I had to sell, which is highly unlikely.:lookout:
I emailed about one of those you posted, 4Runner8. The one in the Chicago area is a good deal but I'm concerned about rust. We don't get rust here in Colorado but I have seen east coast cars pretty rusted out by 100K. Th dealer says there is no rust and that may be true but there is some rust around the hitch. Hate to make a trip up there and have to turn around and come back with no car.:cry2:
