Help: multiple issues

So there seem to be a few consistent issues my 3rd gen has been having. Not sure if they are related or not.

1. For some reason there are times when she wont start. I changed batteries, so that is new. On occasion, it will just click when I turn the ignition (all electronics come on), other times I get a slight engine turn. After trying it multiple times, it starts and runs fine.

2. Recently this started (last couple of weeks, noticed after jiffy lube did an oil change and I installed a k&n air filter, not saying those caused it but sharing in case). When I accelerate, the engine revs higher, rpms and engine noise increasing, but she doesn't go faster. It's like a slow lull. Sometimes, it will hit 3-4k, then catch and move. Seemed to be different in different gears. I cleaned the MAF sensor and unplugged the EFI fuse. Was driving it to see if it would reset. Tonight, it got really bad, to the point where I thought we were going to be on the side of the road. In addition, a burning smell started to accompany it, when I was pushing her to move.

No CEL, only ABS light on. I've had 3 of the 4 O2 sensors replaced in the last year, and I'm closing in on 175k miles. Had last major service at 160k. New brakes and tires in the last year as well. Original clutch and engine.

Anyway, figured someone on here may have some ideas. I cleaned the MAF based on what I read and saw it could be a vacuum leak. Hoping it's not something major.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick reply.

1. Will do. Glad it's a cheap fix.

2. I have manual trans mission, v6. The jiffy lube guy asked me if they could change the transmission fluid, but I thought it had been done at 160k (maybe not then). So I'll try that out.

Want to save as much dough as possible, but do things right. Just got a new addicted OffRoad bumper, and need a winch.

Thanks again.

Issue two sounds like your transmission needs a look at. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

Edit, if you have a manual, sounds like your clutch is slipping. How many miles are on the clutch?

Yep, clutch needs replaced and starter contacts for sure. Here are the part numbers for the contact kits and plunger through toyota. Some will say you don't have to replace the plunger but mine was very noticeably worn.
28235-54380 plunger
28226-54340 contact kit
28226-72010 contact kit

Thanks, contacting dealership and Aamco for pricing.

I highly advise not taking it to a dealership for a clutch service. They'll take one look at the mileage, pair that with a burning smell, and walk you straight into the sales department.

I mistakenly took mine to the dealership when I started noticing a puff of smoke out the tailpipe on startup and they told me my engine (201K miles) was toast and beyond repair.

Long story short, I took it to a local private toyota shop and they replaced the PCV valve ($5) and solved the problem.

Toyota is not interested in maintaining old vehicles. All they care about is selling new ones.

Like everyone said, you need a clutch. Just make sure you buy AISIN products and nothing else if you plan to keep the truck for life.
You'll need the clutch disk, pressure cover, throw-out bearing and pilot bearing (some trucks have this pilot bearing and not sure about the 4runner, I got A/t)

I will also recommend to get a new clutch master and slave cylinder (about $50 - 110 for both. buy Aisin)

Yes, it is a good idea to replace the plunger together with the contacts in the starter. The plunger is connected to about 4-5 inch long spring. At the other end of the spring, there is a metal ball. So make sure you don't loose it. Just apply some pressurized air to clean the contacts area before you put all together and keep an eye on that metal ball.

There are two 14 mm bolts holding the starter, use good tools and a slippage can make things worst. I use 6 sided box sockets and make sure it is fully on the bolt before applying force. (REMEMBER TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST!!!)

Thanks guys, I am calling a few places today for pricing. I may have them do the starter too while in there. I know I can't handle doing the clutch myself, but while they are doing that, might as well do the starter.

I'll post up the quote results, and I'll use the above info as a guide to make sure I'm covered.

Update.

So got pricing.

Far East motors - 8050-1050
Aamco - 800
Dealership - 1700

Aamco is the winner, they wanted 400 for the starter so I'll do that myself. Stopping in tomorrow, so I'll post up if clutch is actually the issue.
