HELP!!! My key keeps getting stuck in the ignition

Ok so just recently my key gets stuck in the acc position and wont go to the wheel lock so i can take the key out. The only way ive tried to get my key out is by slighty pushing the shifter forwards while in park and turning the key to the left. Sometimes it works on the first try others it can take me up to 15 mins just to get it out.

Im pretty sure the problem is that it isnt registering the car in park but rather in another gear probably reverse. I know its not the ignitiom switch because many have done so amd the problem still exists. Which means its the gear selector switch.

I just need input on what to fix and how to go upon doing it. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Yeah.. A couple people have had this problem, including me. The most likely cause is the car still thinks it is in gear. There is a little stud on the shifter inside the housing that lifts a white piece of plastic while it is in park. It will often not grab the plastic. I'm sure there is a way to fix it but I usually just put it in gear then back into park. I've also noticed it helps if I put it in park and let it roll onto the gear then set the e-brake.

If you take off the plastic surrounding the housing, you can see where this plastic is. I tightened the screws on the white plastic housing and that seemed to help for awhile but the problem came back yesterday.

A lot of times this can be caused by a worn out key, I've never seen it on Toyotas, but on GM products it's common, I'd suggest getting a new key cut to the VIN at a locksmith's shop or Toyota dealer, just to make sure.

hmmmm this happens on a lot of cars I've driven..
You tried turning the steering wheel a little, maybe shakin it ? That usually works for me.

If worn out key this... also try putting graphite into the ignition... Same issue on my bike key wont turn and is a struggle. put some graphite in it and is way smooth now.

2nd this ^^^

getting a key recut from an old key often wont fix things. keys wear out and don't trip the tumblers correct.
