HELP Needed - Mysterious Oil Leak

Well considering only about a quart drained out it was a good idea. The dipstick read dry, even though I had only driven a mile after the loss. It needed a new batch of oil. Made it to Vail, CO with no issues! The 4.7 owned the inclines on I-70 and the new 330mm brake upgrade proved to be a good improvement on the numerous, long 7% declines.

I hope you don't mean you used a wrench to put it on. If you did good luck getting that thing off later. Usually for the filters its when they touch (ie stop spinning freely) and 1 more turn. That's all it needs. Also you could have just filled up what went out instead of draining all the good stuff out (unless it all was already out).

I used a filter wrench because my hand couldn't grip it well enough due to the oil. It's not welded on there. And the good thing about using a wrench to put it on is that you can also use the wrench to take it off...fancy! See my previous post about draining the "good stuff" out. There was no way to tell how much was in the engine without draining it. While the dipstick shows you a range of the oil level, it doesn't say "add three quarts." Plus what's $40 over the lifetime of a vehicle? I'm glad I did a fresh drain/fill because had I just winged it by guessing then I would have put in too little oil. Again, this wasn't a situation where I wanted to multiply any potential harm from my previous oversight.
