Help - Oil Change Needed - Boulder, CO

Hey guys. I’ve been on a road trip for the past three weeks and in need of an oil change. I still got about 2500 miles to go before I get back so I don’t want to wait until then. I’m currently in Boulder, CO and all dealers in the area have a two week plus wait time for service appointments. Was on a trip like this last year and had no problems getting oil changes across the country. Of course we were living in a different time then.

Any suggestions on local shops or where to go to get it done? I don’t want to go to places like Jiffy Lube.

When I've been in your shoes, I've just looked online for a local independent shop. Either that or a Valvoline quicklube place, they tend to be a bit better than Jiffylube.

You dont need a lift. Go to wally world, buy the parts, tools and oil, and catch pan, pack of disposable gloves. Go to a far corner of the parking lot and do it there, or at your hotel. Drop the used oil off at any oil change place, firestone, goodyear service station. Then be on your way.

Keep the tools in the truck for next time. Done right and done cheap.

My suggestion. Use full synthetic oil in the future. It doesnt breakdown like conventional oil. In a pinch, like on a long vacation, all you would need to do is replace the oil filter to keep the oil clean.

I have been thinking about doing that. I already have the tools to do it. Just missing the pan. I am running Mobil 1 and have about 5500 miles on it currently. I usually stick to 5k oil changes if possible. Never thought about just changing the filter.

but but... doesn't synthetic oil cause leaks & head gasket issues because its super slippery?? :bolt:

most franchise places that do mechanical work offer oil change service, like goodyear, firestone, etc. or even walmart does oil changes & they are probably better than the average jiffy lube, at least the walmarts in my area of the midwest are usually trustworthy for simple things like an oil change.

I frequently see at autozone a special that includes a cheapie drain pan, shop vacs and orange hand cleaner for dirt cheap. All you need is oil and a filter after that. Good luck.

Mobil 1 is good for 10,000 miles. If it were me, I park over a patch of dirt, gravel road. Swap oil filters and let the dirt absorb the spill if you dont have a tin can to catch it. Just wait til you get home to do a full change.

I dont trust anyone to do the work on my car.

Oil change at a Boulder dealer is probably $500. I’d roll on and change it somewhere else.

for what it's worth...if you're really in a pinch and absolutely need to get it done to keep moving along....i take my 07 v6 to the grease monkey on 28th here in boulder all the time. never had any issues.

If you've got synthetic or blend, even the cheapest of filters is good for 7,500 mi. A better filter should have you good for 10k +

My advice is let it go til you get home. If you’re not starting and stopping with short trips - doing mostly highway driving you’ll be fine. I usually go 7500-10k on mine with synthetic or twice a year. Not worth the headache. Your engine will be fine if you take great care of all the maintenance stuff. You could swap the filter as

Do what people in Nederland do. Just go up lefthand canyon and drain the oil on the side of the road. No, dont do that.

Many dealerships have an express lube service for which you may not need an appointment. I've just used a drain pan that had a lid on it when in the same situation.

A guy on here (meefzah) did this on a long trip in place of a drain pan: he used a flat-ish box, lined it with a trash bag (two is safer IMO), and drained the oil into that. Then tied up the bag and took it to a recycling center.

Check the level, adjust if oil is needed, and just drive home and do it when you get there.
