Help please - LiftGate Windows Roll, Defroster, Wiper all stopped working

hi guys I need some help.

Over a year ago I changed part#4 (Windows Regulator 69807-35030) in my 2010 Limited because it was all rusted due to water sipping into the gate. it was crumbling down so i changed it. I was able to reuse the Window motor (part number 85720-35160). Everything was working great.

a few month back, the back window stopped rolling up and down. I tried several times over a few days to roll the window up and I was able to slowly roll it up and keep it closed since. Since that day the wiper and the defroster stopped working. no issue in operating the lift gate itself.

Today I tried to open everything to see what was the issue. All the wire harnesses looked fine (no cracked cables anywhere). I swapped the Multiplex module with my 2019 Runner but made no difference. so I reconnected the old multiplex module. At some point the window rolled down all the way using the front switch. and that was the end of it. the hatch window does not roll up no matter what I do. One thing I noticed is that when i push the front switch slightly i hear a click in the lift gate.... as if the motor is trying to turn but it is not able to. The window up/down buttons on the lift gate only lock/unlock the car when i push them... no affect on the window roll.

any ideas what could be wrong? i am not looking to take part the window motor from my 2019 and try it in the 2010 Limited. Did anyone here experience this issue? do you think it could be the motor?

I've never experienced this exactly. My wife was using my t4r and told me that the rear defrost stopped working. After a couple of days I took a look at the fuses and had no luck. The next day I was driving it and realized she had bumped the window button leaving it slightly open to where you wouldn't be able to tell. After closing the window completely the defrost and windshield wiper were working.

It sounds to me that there are a couple of problems going on here. I want to assume that it's the window motor. Since your window is not rolling up, you were having problems before it just died on you, and you think you hear the motor trying to engage. Once you get the window rolling and closed all the way, I would look into trying to figure out if there is a limit switch that determines the window to be closed all the way. The window limiting function can also just be the system recognizing a drop in voltage and shutting the motor off once its obstructed (ie. all the way up/ all the way down).

It appears as if your T4R isn't recognizing the window to be closed all the way and preventing the defrost and windhsheild wiper from working. If replacing the motor fixes all of the problems, that would be fantastic. If not you're still going to have to replace the motor to trouble shoot. After replacing the motor, I would check and see if there's a spike in voltage when the window is opened/closed all the way and also when trying to trick the window motor to disengage going up by holding it down and seeing if the motor will disengage. Once the switch recognizes the window is closed it should give you control over the windshield wiper and defrost.

thanks for the tip. I was able to solve the issue.

the window motor (part number 85720-35160) I had reused from the last time, had died completely - it was somewhat rusted but this time I found that it got rusted even more and completely seized. which is what I replaced with another one from a 2018 written-off 4runner (source junkyard).


what I did this time is spryed the whole inside of the lift gate with Fluid-Film so that the track and the motor don't start rusting again.

No problem, glad you were able to get it solved.

It's odd that it corroded like that. I guess it could have happened from salt on the roads getting kicked up, but the seals should be doing their job and keeping any water from coming in. I'm right next to the Mexican Gulf and frequently at the beach, on the beach, and sometimes roll through the water at the beach. This is all fallowed by an extensive wash of the body and undercarriage when I get home. Don't want the salt water to sit too long on any unpainted surface.

I have some work coming up on my lift gate and I'll take a look at the motor while I have it apart just to see what condition its in.

I am having a similar issue, but I have no power it seems to my window or my lift gate. I can’t get it open at all and have to crawl inside and open it with my finger on the latch. I have no power to window/defrost/wiper. I replaced my ECU already and checked fuses So maybe replacing the motor will help?
