Help Sought - Built 3rd Gen FS

Things happened fast today...

The seller said that he did not have to leave town after all, so I scrambled to get the family together and drove nearly 2 hours.

Indeed, zero rust. The seller now has such photos posted on CL. No wetness on the underside too. The engine was cold and started right-up. Let it idle for 5+ minutes. AC is cold, heater works. It drove well. The first multi-mode I ever drove. Seemed to work just fine. Minus the antenna, all of the electrical components work. Doors open and close well, no noise, align nicely.

The paint is oxidized a fair amount, more than I would prefer. I was not so keen on the DVD screen on the ceiling either, nor the stereo/DVD player in place of the stock unit. It is quite a bit deeper, and sticks-out a lot. Looks odd.

While I find all 3rd gens appealing, the 01 was not exactly my first or even second preference. On top of that, the seller was unable to find any receipts pertaining to service and repairs. I had not bothered to see other 4Runners where the owner could not produce records...

I made him an offer though of $6,500. He wouldn't go any lower than $7k. I wished him well and got back home just in time for a birthday dinner...

Thanks everyone for the help and support!

He came down a lot. This was the 10K one? Kind of scary without receipts but if he did the work himself he might not save receipts for Oil changes etc. Sounded like a nice truck for $7000 minus the paint. But I go with my gut feeling a lot too. I should have bought my neighbors '98 last May. $2800 Basic SR5 but there was nothing wrong with it. 215K

Seller wanted $7,900 IIRC and came down to $7K with little struggle.

If he still has it in a week he will probably take $6,700

Correct, it was the later one, a 2001 listed at $7,900. Somewhat low miles, basically original owner, and no rust was the appeal. Not the most sought after year, at least for me, and the lack of any records made me not so keen on opening the wallet more... I figured he'd sell it for more than what I offered, and it did sell today.

The one for which I created this thread, the "built" one, went from $10k, to now 12:

A '97 with 200+k miles , the factory rear locker, would go for about $6,500 to maybe 7k around here.

I have no idea what all of those mods cost, the winch looks to be about $400+ (I just checked), but an addtional 4-5K will seemingly requires a very particular buyer...

I do like how he swapped-in the '99 interior, including the center console, with legit cupholders.

If any of you here in the Bay Area become aware of a T4R FS, if not much trouble, please let me know...

Yup, he did some good mods and is charging for them. GLWS sir

Be patient Tony, you'll find one that fits your bill and budget - then you get to mod the crap out of it your way

All, I just saw a '98 Limited tonight. Has "just" 166k miles. Second owner who bought it in 2000 with 20k miles. Has the rear diff lock. I put it in 4WD for the first time ever, apparently. The underside is damn clean, zero rust, and dry. The engine bay looks clean too. Had the TB and WP done at 86k miles.

The antenna does not work (no surprise). The seats are actually pretty good, except the driver one, the usual basically. He has seat covers... He said that there is a slight drip in the windshield wiper reservoir. I didn't notice, but he wanted me know... It drove very well too.

I didn't buy it, at least not yet. What's wrong. The paint. I can use some help... Please look at these photos. He had a local shop paint part of the top, and hood. Terrible job with a couple runs and a major peel.

About $5k is the ask. Feels odd not getting it due to paint, but my mom who was with me (to drive my other if there were a purchase) was besides herself because of the paint, lol. 500 bucks to 1,000 bucks for a decent to good paint job? Curious to hear your thoughts. He's waiting to hear back from me later tonight. He has other buyers lined-up, but is honoring my spot...

Thanks.

I just got quotes on having my hood painted. $368 for Maaco's top of the line with lifetime warranty. $428, $500, and $700 from 3 other local shops all with lifetime warranty. That was with me pulling the hood and bringing it to them. You'd probably be at least $1,000 for a half decent paint job on that thing.

Would you just be doing the roof and the hood? If it’s just that somewhere above $1000 is right but I don’t think more than $1500(for the good stuff there’s a lot of cheap paint products out there). I’d buy this thing. Rust free, fairly low miles, 4wd with locker, etc. I paint so to me this is a no brainer and I’d be shelling out the cash. If I didn’t know how to paint I guess I’d be a bit more hesitant. But I’d still be getting it and thinking of a cost effective solution. My manager vinyl wrapped the roof of his dodge magnum(he had it matched to the body color) and it looks really good. Maybe look into something like that. There’s cost effective solutions that a DIYer can do without the need to use expensive spray guns, large compressor, and paint. People use tinted(to their body color) raptor/monstaliner which can be rolled/brushes on. The only issue with it is you either do the whole car or not at all otherwise it won’t look right. Good luck with your search.

Scuff the piss out of that beast and bedliner the shiz out of it

Besides, you're gonna chuck that hood for a sport hood someday anyway :thumb:

166K on the odo, with a locker, in Cali? You'd better hop on it. Paint can be fixed. Mileage can't.

If it helps I'll give you a few hundred and my rear axle for the locking axle. I'll even throw in some ToyTech 3" rear springs. lol

Seriously, I'm sure the paint sucks but I'd expect that for the price. Have you run the VIN?

Just found out my buddy might be selling his 00 limited. Lemme text him and get back to you

Update: its a 97. Green. E-locked. Mileage is a lil high at 222k. But hes asking 4600 obo

Guys, thank you. Back home.

Indeed, would love to bedline for sure. Saw a great thread here...

The concern of my wife and family - I can't touch it until maybe next Spring! I'm doing a house remodel on several bedrooms and two bathrooms. Needs to get done. Doing much myself...

So, the wife seems fine with me getting it, under one condition. If she catches me wrenching on it before the house is done, it will be a "hell hath no fury..." type situation here, lol.

Thanks again.

Jayjayb96, thanks! Is it a limited (leather seats)? Paint also oxidized? I imagine modified. PM if easier or more desirable...

Guys - it's sold.

Wow. He said that he would not show it until tomorrow, and that I'd have time to get home and run it by the wife.

My bad. If my mom wouldn't have been there, talking about my wife... Damn.

Jayjayb96, anything with the 00? Oops, '97...

01-02's dont have a brake booster, it's electronically controlled & costs a fortune to replace. Ideally you want a 99-00 with (mechanical) j-shifter for 4wd. I think the rear axle seals leak eventually on all years. I dont think there's a difference....

With my sulking done...

Have brake boosters been successfully swapped into an 01-02? Maybe not using the best search terms, but I have not yet found such a thread...

Thanks.

The easy answer is no, different ECU. If you want a 99-00 buy one, don't try to downgrade a later vehicle. That being said, someone's probably done it.
