Help! Starter removal

Stuck trying to pull the starter on a 99 with the 3.4. I've googled it and only thing I found was to drop it threw the lower a arm, but can't do that with the axle shaft in place.
Also tried to drop it down next to the tranny and frame but it gets hung up on the tranny lines, steering lines, and mount for the sway bar. And the sway bar is removed so no need to tell me to pull that out of the way. Any one have tips for removing a starter?

basically you have to undo the brake line from the frame, and carefully move it out of the way, the remove the top half of the auto trans dipstick if you are an auto. also remove the tire/wheel. then you can tetris it out between the exhaust manifold, frame and behind the coilover tower... it only goes one way and is tricky

I replaced my clutch on a 96 5speed last month and had plenty of room to remove starter my front axle shaft was removed but didn't remove sway bar. Idk
 
The fender well. Take the brake line mount lose bend them gently out of the way and pull the starter out. It's a pain in the arse. And yes it needs to be lifted off the ground a little to do it
 
I feel your pain, I tried to remove mine a few months ago. After fighting with it for about 2 hours, I gave up, left it in there and just replaced the starter contacts instead.
I had unbolted the trans dipstick tube and loosened the brake line, but still couldn't get it out. As mentioned above, It is possible, but damned if I could figure it out. Good luck!

I did the same thing last year but with the trans and bell housing out it's a piece of cake. Even with it in, manuals are much easier because of some nasty fluid lines and the trans dipstick. We stickshift guys have to be quiet here.
 
It's still fighting even with moving the brake line and dipstick, wish I had everything to swap a manual trans in this thing tonight.
 
hopefully you are just replacing the contacts in it if its a Denso, but if you are replacing it only replace it with a Denso reman unit. if its not a Denso part then oh well. but if it is for goodness sakes what ever you do, do not give the parts house a denso one back for a core.
 
I have been running a Napa premium(?) since 2007, you should be fine. Some Indy shop replaced the starter in my 4runner for $320 back in Xmas 06 for the previous owner.
 
I give up - I just can't take it anymore.

I could not get to the two bolts holding on the starter - tried to remove the exhaust bracket but the 14mm bolt that is vertical was too rusted and I stripped the head. I can't waste any more time on this. I'm going to take my Rockauto Denso reman and go find a real mechanic.
 
It's a PITA. It took me about 8 hours to replace the contacts while keeping it in the engine bay. I tried to pull it out of the wheel well, but couldn't get it through. It's a bit like Tetris or Unblock Me in there. The bolts on my exhaust bracket were pretty rusted too, but I was able to get them off. Not sure what to tell you if you can't get those bolts off. Technically, you probably don't have to take off the bracket if you have a proper combination of extensions and joints. I got to that point and wanted to give up too, though.

I've got a denso in the garage that I think got cooked when the starter wouldn't disengage but I haven't had the heart to trash it--dumb question but what should I do with it? Can I rebuild it?
