HELP! starting a build! want some tips/advice

so I bought my runner back in 2012 and its bone stock, nothing fancy, just a good reliable nice driving rig. ive been very pleased with it thus far, however I have decided its time to give the old gal a make over. im gonna start the project probly in the end of july, with the normal lift and wheels and tires. im gonna go with the toytec ultimate 3" lift with 650# springs to support the extra weight of the future bumpers and roof rack. im not sure yet about the size and type of tires im gonna go with tho. so let me have it, im new to Toyotas and I am a sponge, willing to learn anything and everything I can about the good the bad and the ugly ways to customize the rigs! :ranger:

Welcome and congrats on your toyota purchase, can't go wrong with a toyota! Your in the right place, T4R has alot of good info at your finger tips, just use the search bar and soak it all in. I have Toytec's Ultimate lift on my 00 4runner and love it, couldn't believe how smooth the ride is for a lifted truck. Another nice mod is the tundra brake upgrade, the 199mm calibers and the larger thicker rotors are a direct bolt on. I also recommend replacing the worn and soft rubber rack & pinion bushings with poly bushings, really firms up the steering. I have these mods and more on my 4runner.

I'd say look at the driving you do the most with your rig. If your rig is a daily driver and you drive it a bit, I would say putting 35's on it would be a bad idea.
 
Congrats on your purchase. You will have many miles of Toyota smiles for sure. Agree with the above, you are in the right place. So much great info and people here on T4R. Be warned, we will help you spend money! :)

The Ultimate lift is great (and really straight forward install). I have it on my 5th Gen. It's even better with new UCAs. Good look with your build and start a build thread so we can follow your progress!
 
I will be using it as a daily driver for a while, until I get a new truck. at which point the runner will go the garage to get SASd and caged. but in the mean time it will see mostly pavement along with its fair share of mountain roads and mud holes(theres a lot of those up here in the Pacific NW) since my favorite thing to do in the summer is camping. im thinkning 33s or something close to that size but im not totally against the idea of a 35 if I can find a good handling one that wont rub...
 
Welcome, I don't recommend 35's either. I just installed the toytec Ultimate on mine with 285/75r16s and I am struggling to pull hills on the interstate (not that it had THAT much power before).

 
I was planning on 285's but after reading here about the weight difference compared to the 265's I mounted up LT265/75r16 duratracs.

what about gearing? are you running stock gears? would lower gears be beneficial if I were to run larger tires? what would be the cons to getting lower gears vs. doing engine mods such as header, exhaust, intake, ect...? I know I don't have the biggest power house under the hood(2.7L) but I cant help but think that this motor is plenty strong enough to turn some bigger tires with the right modifications.
 
update!

UPDATE! ive decided to go with the BOSS lift from toytech. just cuz, why not? haha this is America right? the land of excess!

I'm sure with a gear change and a set of tundra brakes, you could run them with no problem. I may end up changing the gears and brakes on mine
 
I personally wouldn't run too much of a bigger tire on the 2.7l. I have a 3.4l with what are roughly 32" tires and with the amount of long distance and hill driving, it would drive me more nuts (more than it already does) if I ran a bigger tire.

But, there are also plenty of people out there running bigger tires whom it doesn't seem to bother, so it's all about personal opinions and preferences.
 
After ordering my toytec boss 3" lift I realized I'm gonna need some better looking wheels... So I took my stock wheels and slapped a coat of paint on em... Turned out pretty good in my opinion... Sorry about the picture I can't figure out how to rotate it

not really digging that look there buddy, the red on the caps, perhaps you should do the whole rim black, maybe matte black/ plasti dip. that would most likely give it the more aggresive look. and if you dont like it, hopefully you have some leftover red to slap back on

Yeah I'm not sure about the red either... But like you said a quick coat of paint will fix it
 
I think 265/75r16s look great, even with 3 inches of lift. I would pick a nice AT for street manners and good dirt performance. Knarly tires wear quicker and cost more at the pump. Especially if you have a Daily Driver with the 2.7. Dont get me wrong, the 4 popper is a great motor, but without some gearing you will be very frustrated by its lack of power with big rubber. My truck is a 2.7 5spd, with 4.56 gears (these are actually a little lower than normal) and that's what I am running, its great, and will surprise where you can go with 32-ish inch tires. :rockon:
