HELP: Stereo Volume When Driving

I just picked up an 06 Sport Edition V6 on Friday and LOVE it!! I bought a Griffin Noise Canceling Aux Cable to listen to my ipod while driving, and it works great. One thing I've notice the last three days is when I drop below 30 or 25 mph my stereo sounds like someone lowered the volume on me, and then when I accelerate after a stoplight, or a stoppage, the stereo gets noticeably louder again. I was wondering if this is a stock feature of the 4Runner, that raises the volume when your moving at a higher speed, and lowers it when you slow down and stop. I have no clue, but it is definitely a noticeable difference in volume and has me wondering whats up. Thanks.

Do you have NAV? I have heard of that feature but not on 4Runners, is your stereo completely stock?

Yes its stock, with no Nav. It's the 6 Disc CD/MP3/WMA (non-JBL). It really is annoying when you slow down and the stereo volume decreases. If anyone has any info or has heard of this please let me know. Thanks.

Well its certainly not a function of the stock stereo. Have you fiddled with the settings on the hookup? Is it only iPod or all sources (radio/CD too)?

It is the stock stereo thats doing it. Look where you base and treble adjustments are and you will find ASL (or something like that ) It make the volume increase when speed increase and visa versa . You can set it to lo/med/high/off.

Falls is right - the stock head units have adaptive sound leveling (ASL).

Yep ASL would be it, I have an 06 sport and when i had my stock deck, i would use ASL for bass and such to amplify the noise. You could hear the bass hit harder when you were accelerating

Yea that's definitely what I noticed the most, the difference in the Bass. So what would your recommendation be? I have it on Medium now(thats how it came), should I put it on OFF,LOW,MED,or HIGH? I have the Bass on 4 out of 5, but I had no idea what the ASL stood for until now.

Oopps my mistake, sorry OP. I only had the stock stereo in for about a week before I swapped it out.

I shut off the ASL because I thought it had a negative effect on the sound quality. The OP said it's more noticable in the bass; I recall that it didn't seem to apply evenly to all frequency ranges.
