Help with 01 4Runner Tape Player Audio

So, I like to enjoy listening to music on my iPhone while traveling around town and on long trips. I have the stock radio in my 2001 4Runner SR5. And, I'm using a cassette tape adapter, whatever you want to call it, that has the auxiliary (headphone) jack at the end of it that plugs into my iPhone.

The problem is, when I press tape on the radio interface (I have my music ready to play or already playing at this time), it ejects the tape every time after about 3 or 4 seconds. I noticed on the radio screen, a down arrow will appear followed by up arrow(or vice versa), as if the tape is reading both sides. It will play for about 2 seconds then the arrows will flip, then will just eject.

Anyone have any suggestions? Do I need to clean the tape player perhaps?

I can try and provide some pictures tomorrow for further details.

Usually a Cassette player which does not have manual eject, fastforeward, and rewind will not work with a cassette adaptor, they don't sense pressure on the roller feeds and eject the (faulty) cassette. Best bet is to ditch the cassette adaptor and radio and upgrade to new one that has an aux/ USB input. One could be picked up for less than $100 all day long.
