help with bulb "type" for rear turn signals 06-09 models

i need help finding out what type of LED bulbs i need to replace the rear turn signals so it will finally be all LEDs as IMHO it should have been that way from factory. they are bigger fatter versions so i have no idea what the LED bulb "type" number is to look for but the OEMs are 21w bulbs so the LED replacements would at least need to be 24w or more. i have the 06 sport with the oem LED stop/running light tail lights and already replaced the 921 backup bulbs with LEDs so the only thing not LED at this time is the rear turn signal bulbs.

these are larger bulbs with wider sockets then the 921 bulbs for the backup lights but they "look" just the same as the small glass blade socket bulbs, just larger sized

the oem number is 90981-15021 or 81550L but i cant find any crossover number to buy an LED replacement to fit that socket.

also, does anyone know if will there be any issues swapping the bulbs out? i ask because i see some LED replacements include resistors that need to be installed and those resistors are impossible to install on 06-09 tail lights with circuit board twist lock bulb sockets. i know certain vehicles are designed for incandescent bulbs and require resistors to convert to LEDs but just not sure if 4runners are like that too.

i would "like" to convert the turn signals if i can but will leave it oem if i have to since the bulbs are still working fine at this time

Rear turn signal is 7440. I used to run the 27 led 5050 there. It's bright. Also swap the flasher relay out to use with led bulbs. Better than wiring resistors.
I have since bought the diodedynamics module and converted the whole tailight into a signal also. Only a little bit of rewiring is needed, but you don't have to copy my mod.

Rear signal bulbs are 7440NA, also know as T20. NA = amber bulb

Keep in mind LEDs draw less current than incandescents, so they don't necessarily need to consume 21 watts to produce the same amount of light 21w incandescent does. In fact a 21w LED would produced a whole lot of light and heat. I have to redo my testing or find my previous results but a LED replacement bulb consumes nowhere near 21w.

Correct, without resistors OR a LED-compatible flasher relay you will suffer from hyperflash. If you don't have DRLs there are readily available flashers, but if you want to keep the DRLs you need to wire resistors to the rear signals. It's not impossible to wire resistors to these taillights,'03-'05 tails are also twist-lock, just a matter of tracing the wires.

Also you basically get what you paid for with LED bulbs. Most designs are crap, the ones I highly recommend have to be ordered from a Japan-based seller. But VLEDs (USA based company) recently released their new line of T20 bulbs, a friend just tested the red ones (excellent) and should be finishing up testing the yellow ones today...if the results are positive I might actually buy a set for my mom's GX470

watch it a couple of times if you can understand the basics, ill take a pic if i can, its pouring for the next 2 days here.


find the stop and signal at the main harness. cut both , but always leave extra wire hanging from the plug, atleast 4 inches if you can. now take the stop at the plug and wire it to the output side of the module.
wire the stop wire to the input that says stop.
wire the signal that says signal input. now here comes the tricky part, if you want to use the stock signal along with the tails, then dont cut that signal wire, instead use a small peice of wire and tap in that signal wire and wire it to the signal input of the module, you get to use both brake light and signal light together.
now if you want to use the stock signal light as reverse lights, you take the cut signal wire from the plug, and tap that to the red yellow wire for reverse lights. that way you can change to some bright 7440 leds or bulbs.

let me know if you need help. i think you got the wiring part wrong with your first try.
