Help with cv axle/boot...installed but I have a gap!

Hey guys,
I replaced the front right wheel bearings..and I'm was all ready to put the hub back together....I put the Hub on, tightened the four bolts that hold it then cranked the axle nut Down to 179 foot-pounds-problem is when I inspected the boot I still have a gap between the hub and the cv axle boot.

See the pic-but how do I close this gap!??!!! Grr it's frustrating.

Let me clarify..that's just the outside if the little collar the cv boot goes into-there is no spring showing.
The gap was not there before I pulled the hub and bearing assembly.
 
I can pull on the outside and kinda get it to seat but as soon as I let go it slides inward and the gap re-appears....help??:shrug:
 
I just had to replace my half shaft because the axle nut some how pulled some threads with it when I removed it . I too was replacing the unit bearing hubs . If you have buggered threads on the axle shaft ,it could be preventing the axle nut from going on fully to completely seat the half shaft in the back of the hub assembly. This will allow the in /out play you are getting. Just a thought ! :yo:
 
Any update on this issue? I took he hub and knuckle apart, and after re installing, torqueing the axle nut to 173, I also have a Small gap..

If you want a response from the OP [MENTION=62322]redkaz04[/MENTION] you need to quote his post which will notify him he has been quoted, as I did your post, otherwise since this topic is 4 years old he may never know you're asking a question of him. I just checked and he is still active as of today so he should see you quoted him!!

You can also "mention" someone's username with a @ symbol in front of it as I did which will also notfiy them and get their attention, so hopefully he will stop by this topic and give you an answer.

Hey I know I'm reviving this but I am now encountering the same issue. What was your resolution?

I see that you have a 5th gen, but this should be very similar. The PNs may be different, you may need to confirm those with the dealer.

So there are two seal on that outer end of the CV, one of them is on the CV, and one is pressed into the knuckle. My guess is the spring on the knuckle side seal came out when the CV was removed and just got stuck in between both of these


The seal on the knuckle side should be 90316-A0001

The seal on the CV side should be 90304-A0001

I have these saved on that CV side seal, they have better pics that can hopefully show it better than mine:

I didn't replace that outer CV side seal 90304-A0001, but probably should have while I was in there. I did replace that knuckle side seal though, pretty easy to get in using a mallet and either the axle nut dust cap or a fitting piece of drain pipe. For what it's worth, the dust cap that goes over the axle nut fits like a glove to tap that sucker in. You have to do light taps around the circumference so that it seats evenly or else it gets stuck and you have to do it three times. Ask me how I know.......
