Help!!!

So I was doing an LED swap and working on my HVAC console, everything went fine until I plugged the HVAC unit in and turned the lights on. That's when the unit started to smoke, so I unplugged it. (I had been checking the leds throughout the install and all worked fine until my last two) I let it set for second, disconnected two of the screw in leds (the small ones with the screw in bracket, oh I used the factory ones not the neo type from superbrightleds.com), well I didn't turn the truck on but I turned on the lights, everything worked fine. SO then I tried starting the truck and it wouldn't start, it would turn, all lights, hvac controls, dashboard, everything works but it would just make a clicking noise. I figured I might have blown some fuse but I wouldn't know which one to change. Anyway, I took the HVAC unit out and let it sit for a little while, then turned the truck on without the HVAC unit and it turned on just fine, but when I plug the HVAC unit in it won't start. Any ideas on what this could be?

Anyone have any ideas? I'm going to test the battery tomorrow but I doubt that's what it is. I might have to get a new starter but I'm not sure how affected the starter would get with this issue. Other than that, I'm not sure, so I'm still looking around for an answer. I'll probably end up towing the truck to an auto electrical repair shop but I'm trying to do as much myself as possible. We'll see. It's funny, at least my LEDs look good in blue now. Ha.

OK...I haven't experienced this myself, but I know makristal went through something similar recently. it ended up being a fuse core that blew that is underneath the engine fuse block. Not exactly sure if that is your problem but that's what the master tech at toyota told him. He's not on here very often but i'm sure if you PM him, he'll be able to give you specific things to look for.

I wouldn't rule out battery, unless you had your truck off while you did the mod. I was playing around on my truck this past saturday and I had the radio on for probably about 4hrs. Anyways, I went to start my truck after the 4hrs and all I got was the click. So I put the charger on it for 1hr and it started fine.

Thanks guys. I'll double check the battery and fuse core. I didn't want to try to jump start the battery b/c I wasn't sure what would happen if the battery is fully charged so I'll probably get a multimeter to check it. Do you guys think there will be an issue with jumping it? I did the mod with everything off so I'm not sure too sure about the battery but everything I read says to check it first. Thanks again. I can't believe this happened on something so simple as an LED swap.

haha TRDCal - I had the same thing happen to me on friday while I was fooling around with my truck. Went to move it, all I heard was click....guess I didn't realize how quick the battery would die!
It worked out in the end as I discovered my voltage regulator on my alternator was going bad and I also was able to pick up a new yellow top. :guitar2:

Yah I find the 4runner wierd for that. In my old Corolla, if the battery was too dead to start it, then the dash lights would be dim and the radio wouldnt work. In the runner, all lights were bright, radio was working fine like I didnt even think it was a dead battery at first. Thank god it was...makes for an easy fix

This could probably ahve been avoided if you disconnected the battery when you were working in the electrical system and replacing bulbs

BReardon, you are correct. Ha. Thanks for the help guys, it turned out to be a battery issue. Got a jump then went and got a new battery and everything is working.

Ok maybe someone can point me in the right direction. So this is the first time that I've driven at night since I got the truck running again and I noticed that none of the LEDs that I replaced are turning on (expect for the arrows, the ones when you press a function on the HAVC unit). The LCD displays all information, so I know it works and when the lights are off I can see the blue lights in the background but when I turn the lights on, none of the HVAC unit LEDs turn on. I'm thinking that it could be a fuse but I'm not sure which one to check first. If it's not a fuse, then I'm thinking it could be the circuit board but I'm not sure. Has anyone else had this issue or know what it could be. The first picture is with the lights on and the second is with the lights off.

Anyone, any thoughts? At best I have to change a fuse, at worse I head to a junk yard to try to find a replacement HVAC unit. I want to avoid the dealership but will probably head that way towards the end of the week.

Hey guys, I've been out of town for a while and have recently returned. I noticed that I am still having the same issue (shown above) with my HVAC cluster, so I'm resurrecting this post. I checked all of the individual LEDS and they work, so I'm wondering if there might be someone on here that has seen this issue before? The backlight on the LED turns on when the lights are off but when I turn the lights on, the LED turns off. The only lights that work at all times are the indicator lights that (the little arrows). Anyone have any suggestions?
