Paint on my '87 was pretty bad and carpet inside was nasty ... especially after I too the top off and it got all wet. Not ready to spend as much on the truck for new paint ... so I did a little ghetto makeover. Herculiner in the bed and plasti dip on the whole exterior. I had already plate dipped the wheels and fenders black, so I roughed up the old white paint, filled a couple of holes, and covered the rest with camo tan Plasti dip. Whole thing probably cost $150. There is a good thread somewhere (can't find it now) on how to do the bed liner, but it was pretty easy and took about 6 hours total. I used some spray on rustoleum bed liner for the roll bar and hard to reach area. Exterior just took some masking tape, a steady hand, and a couple of PBR's. Nothing too pretty , but overall I'm pretty happy with it. Can't find the pictures from when I got it, but you can imagine a dirty white truck with itty bitty rusty wheels.

this was my first 4runner
One thing i did was get a piece of sheet metal, cut it to fit the openings on the sides and screwed it in place... I cut out some custom speaker holes where I wanted them, then filled the area behind with expanding foam (insulation up north, and helps her float a lil) then finish the inside metal surface with bedliner as well!
