Here is an update on my new 4runner!

Ok guys, I took the plunge and picked up this 3rd gen. Ended up paying 3700 for it. I think I did a decent job as the vehicle's interior was very clean. I will update this thread with pictures as soon as I can upload them. First picture is when I first got it. I took some progress pictures to show you guys how far it's come and it has only BEEN A WEEK! :dance:

The vehicle did not have TOO much wrong with it, just standard Toyota stuff.
What I have done so far:
Full tune up; spark plugs, all 3 coils, spark plug wires. (turned out the guy was running NGK single electrode spark plugs coupled with auto-lite wires, looked like original coils)
Valve cover gaskets and rear cam plugs. (had a severe valve cover leak)
Replaced front brakes with 231MM Calipers, Advics Pads and Centric Premium Rotors.
Replaced the battery with a Red Top Optima.
DRL Disable Mod.
TRD Decals


When I first saw it in the car lot.




Looking at this crazy oil leak. Came from the valve covers and has been leaking for a LONG time. I pressure washed the engine and it looks much better, I will take another pic.

Spent quite a few hours with some friends doing these valve covers and tune-up. There was SO MUCH OIL caked on the covers they took forever to clean. Soaked them in the parts washer and ran them through for about an hour. They came out clean!

If you look in this picture, look at the harness where the fuel rail mounts to. The plastic cover that normally is there completely disintegrated and fell apart. I re-wrapped the harness with some loom and electrical tape real nice and tight and bound them with some screw type clamps to the head. Was a real nice job when we were done. I circled it so you know what I am talking about.

[MENTION=146139]TravisM[/MENTION] Yea bro, it was the one that everyone said was too expensive. The main reason I bought it was it had NO RUST AT ALL and it was the COLOR I wanted. I am one of the few lucky people to have a shop that my dad owns and am able to do things myself.

I feel in-order to start the truck on the right path it has to be the right color that you want.

Yea, it honestly wasn't as bad as I thought. Just needed a few hours of some TLC and it rides WAY better with the new suspension. Then again...have any of you rode on stock suspension with 270k miles? OMG its terrible.

But I am having a blast working on this truck knowing that it is my truck and it's only getting better with each upgrade!

Although my last truck was a 1999 I didn't have the traction control issue that I am having with this one. I went wheeling the other day and my truck made this beeping noise and it stopped spinning my tires when I was in sand. This is annoying as hell and I want to disable it.

Do I follow the Andymod 2.0?

I'd recommend changing the radiator now too. You got all the big upgrades done! What did you end up doing for your lift ?

Truck looks good. I just bought a built 3rd gen myself that had everything it needed done just before I bought it, except for the brake booster. It's gonna need a rebuild or a new one so that's on the agenda. Those fuel injector loom casings are guaranteed to fall apart at that mileage. I got lucky when I did the valve covers on my 04 tacoma and only the little areas that the screws insert through cracked when the screws were loosened so I was able to reuse them. Enjoy the new truck.

Thanks man! It looks like it has a new radiator put in. I put in some hours on this truck. I think around 20 hours so far just tinkering around with it. Just replaced my dash lights today! Had issues with those ECT Power and Defrost buttons so they aren't working atm.

I bought new TRD Coils with the Bilstein 5100s at the 2nd perch for the front. Rears are the Landcruiser coils with Totiko shocks for the rear. I have the Toyo AT2 LT in a 265/75/16 size to keep my gas mileage and comfort to a max. I also decided on a C load tire for more cushion. It rides so good with this set up. Its crazy. I basically did the build your own system from the Sonoran Steel website. I read about Toytec coils for the front for less stiffness and for a higher lift. I don't think its necessary at this moment.

What are some of the first mods all of you guys did to your truck? I went through the guides, but I wanna hear some personal favorites. How well does a sleeping platform work?

How do I change my radio lights?

First mod for me was a lift.
Second was replacing the factory radio and speakers. That's how you change the radio lights
Third was rebooting my ripped CV boots. Not really a "mod" more of a you will have to do it.

Hahaha. In Texas all he'll get by doing that is greasy hands every time he crawls underneath. That thing isn't rusting anytime soon where he is. I wish the same could be said for NJ.

Yea, you guys are right!

Unfortunately I am going to Colorado from October 28th - May 2017, So I am going to get this full winter season on the bottom of my truck.

When you say Fluid Preserve the bottom what do you mean? Is the rust COMING?! :behindsofa:
