Hey, new 4Runner owner here from Boston

Hello, fellow 4Runner members. I just made the transition from BMW to Toyota 4 days ago. Also this is my first brand new car. So far I am enjoying my new 4Runner. I did think it would get better gas mileage, but oh well...

I am curious which popular sites do other 4runner members use? I am looking to mod my headlights, leveling kit, maybe add running boards, and the that's a wrap. Or even what parts are popular. I have been reading other threads, but I thought this would be a good start to introduce myself to the forum.

Yeah unless on flat surfaces in decent conditions, I've come to realize the fuel economy on the highway is pretty dismal at 120kph(75mph). I haven't got better than 13L/100km(18MPG) since August. I did get in the 20mpg range driving down to DC last summer though.

There are a couple threads on running boards. If you search the 2014 thread you will find some nice looking OEM ones that look better and sleeker than the chunkier ones used on the 10-13's and on some 14's. The part # is there too. I don't know of any other 4Runner specific sites but there's other Toyota related pages on Face Book. I'm down the road from you in Worcester. Chances are pretty good we'll be passing each other:lookout:
 
Welcome boss, what part of Boston? I am right by Fenway.

As for other sites, I used to own a Tacoma, and Tacomaworld.com is a huge site, with TONS of users/threads/mods/info/etc. There is a bit more "trash" there, but if you are looking for info on Mods and such, that place is great. This website is also very helpful too, and some very good people here.
I modded my Tacoma a decent amount, so if you every have questions about anything, let me know and we can grab a JP Licks or Fenway Frank.

How you drive will have a great effect on how good is your gas mileage.

I filled up today 368.3 miles on Trip A. The tank took 17.296 gallons, meaning that I got 21.29 MPG.

It also means that there were 6.7 gallons left in the tank; which, at 21 MPG would have afforded me another 140 miles. So, in theory, I could have driven 508 miles on the tank.

If you're getting bad gas mileage it's not the vehicles fault, it is capable of good mileage. If you drive aggressively and it gets bad mileage, guess what, it's not the vehicle, it's you. :tape:

Mileage is also heavily dependent on your frame of reference. I came from a 98 Ford Explorer V8 AWD. When I was lucky, it got 16MPG. It's all relative.

If you off-road, you're going to get bad mileage, but the fun more than makes up for it.

I did speak to soon about the gas mileage since I only have 170 miles on the SUV, but Thank you.

I did speak to soon about the gas mileage since I only have 170 miles on the SUV, but Thank you. I mostly do city driving and I am sure my lead foot does not help.
 
Mods

IMO n-fab steps look good unless you need sliders, but I may biased. In this photo my co-driver took the left seat and would not give it back to me for about 2 hours.
A set of Bilstein 5100s can be a good way to level.

If you plan on really wheeling your truck, I wouldn't buy running boards. They hang way too low and will be destroyed. Look at real sliders. They allow for more ground clearance, better protection, mount to the frame and you can still use them as a side step.

Actually, I think part of it might be determined by the vehicle and its systems. If OP has a Limited, it has full-time 4WD... which may have different mileage results than your SR5 with part-time 4WD.

In reality, slowing down helps more than the number of driven wheels.
 
Besides since folks from Boston are here, question about Cape Cod National Seashore Oversand Beach Driving. Have you guys tried it, anything 4Runner specific to be aware of? I might visit my relatives in the area in a few weeks, and thinking about driving to Cape Cod and try this.

Limited's 20's don't make the cut, hahahaha! I bought new wheels/tires, so that's not an issue.

I also have a folding shovel, tow strap, hook etc. I think equipment wise I'm good. Has anyone actually done it? Is it worth it? 50 bucks for a 7 day permit is fine by me.

Side note (irrelevant story)
I drove on Martha's Vineyard (Chappy) last year in my buddies D90. Aired down, that thing is a beast. It has a 4.6 liter swap, so first gear was worthless. 2nd gear starts in deep sand, the truck would spin for a half second, the entire truck would sink about 2 inches into the soft sand then off you went! Super fun! Part of the reason I bought a 4Runner! Because truck!

We ran across some "brahs" in a Highlander buried up to the axels. I should have taken a picture. Gucci loafers trying to dig out a highlander on 20's was a sight. Even the D90 couldn't pull that thing out. (No winch, just a tow strap, no recovery strap).

Anyway, anyone who's driven out on the outer cape chime in! I figure it'll be fun for the family to do, bring a picnic and have fun!
