HG Question

I'm planning on replacing my HG in my 3.0. It hasn't blown but I've read about ll of the problems these motors have with the HG so I figured I would replace it while i have the top portion of the motor apart for the valve cover gaskets replacement. My question is: Do I need to have the head decked/plained (whatever you call it) when I replace it. I would assume that the head is flat since I haven't had a head gasket issue. Also, what is the issue the the HG anyway? Is it improper torque on the head bolts? I know that the 7Mge and 7MgTe that were in the early model Supras motors had an HG issue due to improper torque on the bolts. Thanks in advance!

Poor cooling channels in the block and a poor wrap around exhaust pipe are most of the problem.

You can check your heads with a strait edge and some feeler gauges. The FSM will tell you how.

The cross-over pipe for the exhaust wraps over the top of the rear of the engine adding heat to the 2 rear cylinders. Piss poor design.
