Hi to all, and Which OBDII brand to buy

Hi there folks,

This is my first post, and hopefully will be many more to come, I would like to say hello to everyone here, this looks like a good forum to come and share our 4runner experiences and what not.

I have a question for you all though. I have an 04, I would like to be able to scan whatever engine codes ever come along and be able to reset it. What is your recommendation on what brand and type of OBDII to buy. Thank you in advance.

Are you looking for a stand alone or the ones you need a laptop for?
Actron is pretty overpriced for what it does, but it "works".

Davis CarChip E/X i have heard good things about. It does require a computer but seeing as you already have one you should be fine. As i understand it, it's just a simple usb transfer over to your computer. It cannot tell if you are switching from car to car though.

The non computer ones, i guess you would have to go with Actron Pocketscan CP9125 because i don't know of many other hand helds. I would look for reviews for others, because the Actrons are overpriced for what they do.

Also these two i named are about a year old, may want to look for the new models.


Note: none that you can buy will probably compare to the dealer's ob2. Also for most detailed readings you might have to send it in to the company website for a "diagnosis" which basically screws you out of 2 dollars. You will probably be able to find a good diagnosis for these codes online somewhere.

do you need the device just for code scanning and resetting?

if so, i've been doing this, go to autozone, they will let you borrow the obdII scanner for you to read and reset code. it's free, what they need is just your credit card, take a deposit. once you return the scanner, they put the deposit back to your card.

Means your due to change the engine oil. Check the manual.

Mine is on too, although i just got it. Damn dealer probably didn't even change the oil.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll read the manual and see if it is going to tell me how to reset it, hope it's not a dealer thing only.

Its very easy to reset.

1. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position
2. Set odometer/trip display to "ODO" mode
3. Turn ignition switch to "OFF" position
4. Depress and hold the Trip Meter "RESET" button while turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position
5. The service maintenance reminder light will:

i. Illuminate solidly for 3 seconds
ii. Blink for 2 seconds
iii. Illuminate solidly for 1 second
iv. Turn off

6. Release the Trip Meter "RESET" button
7. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position
8. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position and confirm that the service maintenance reminder light goes out.

It's a mileage reminder. Depending on the year the light flashes and stays lit at different intervals (since the last reset). Toyota introduced a change during the 4th gen, so not every year is the same. On my '06, it flashes for a couple seconds at 4500 miles and stays lit at 5000 miles.

The maintenance light does not know when the oil was last changed or if it needs to be changed. There isn't any sensor or monitor for the oil and its life span.
