HID lights?

Hi all,

We were going to purchase a new 4Runner but have decided to wait a year so I am looking to do some upgrades to my 2006. Since I have always considered the headlights sort of on the dim side I was wondering if anyone had any advice on a good/reliable/non-destructive HID conversion kit.

I had a Lincoln MKZ that had a conversion kit but it didn't play nice with the cars timed auto-off lights function, plus it caused some flickering lights deal once in a while. Since our 06 is in such good shape I would hate to do any damage to the electrical system.

Instead of messing with HID, you can get much more light output by just switching the low beams to H9 bulbs. Trim one small tab on the H9s to get them to fit, and they will nearly double the output of your low beams for less than $20 (and keep your wiring stock).

You did mean H9 standard bulbs and not the H9 HID blubs, right?

Yep, standard halogen H9's, I got these ones off Amazon for our 4Runners.

Here is a nice writeup on which tabs to trim. I only had to trim the plastic tab, I was able to get the metal tab to fit without modification by angling the bulb a bit when inserting it into the housing. I used a tool like this to trim off the plastic tab and it worked perfectly.

Stock H11 bulbs put out ~1250 lumens
H9 bulbs put out ~2100 lumens

For even more light, you can also switch out your high beams from 9005 to 9011's by trimming a few more tabs (also described in the writeup I linked).

Yeah, I think 35w is plenty and less heat and current draw as well. Mine are all I'll ever need.

ccvortex, not ever h9 bulb has 2100lm, the blue tinted ones have a whiter light but most times put out less lumens, higher lumens is what you need to look for. they also dont normally last as long.

If you want increased light output, I'd suggest our H11 XenonDepot Xtreme HID kit The 4300K color would be the brightest and be equivalent to a factory HID. The 5000K color (white) is also very popular. Don't forget to use the "T4R" code at checkout to save $25 off on the kit.
