I would adopt that land cruiser and give it a better life...
your point about maintenance is so true. most people simply don't care about their vehicles. many see it as a means for transportation and nothing more - "why put money in something that only depreciates?" it's these people that then complain that their cars break down every 3-4 years. it's a short term mindset, just because something depreciates that doesn't mean you can't extend its useful life with regular upkeep
I know many people that have never washed and waxed their vehicles. it may seem like such a trivial thing to do - but put a car that has been washed and waxed at least once a year for 10 years beside a car that hasn't at all and I bet you'd be able to tell the difference real quick
the little things add up especially over many many years. I feel like people that buy 4runners generally care about their vehicles more than the average person which is partly why you see so many high mileage ones around
To add to that as time has gone on...
The close friend of mine had made a mistake few months ago of helping his sister and her... partner (I guess?) get a car. He's always been the kind of person to try to help out his family as much as possible... but unfortunately it normally would result in people taking advantage of him sadly. Yes, his own family.
Anyway, his sister was basically a perfect example of the issues with you see now days... Doesn't care about anything coming just expects to get stuff free, has no concept of value or responsibility.
During the 6 months or so that they had the car, they never washed it, never cleaned the inside it, hit another car with their door and left without saying anything. it eventually got to the point where they were barely making the payments on time.
It was also during this time that the partner decided to steal money from my friends and kick him out, he was renting from them at the time.
Hilariously even though she always had this thing about talking about her college degree and how she was smarter than other people, she was not smart enough to have the title in her name..
So my friend ended up taking the car back, which was fully in his name, and selling it. Lol. Nothing they could do about it.
But anyway back to the treatment of the vehicle, unfortunately that's just extremely common nowadays. There's been times at work where I've mentioned something about doing preventative maintenance or whatever and people just look at me like I'm an alien. of course then I see their vehicle outside of eventually and it looks like garbage haha
