Hitch Cargo Carrier

ryan, etrailer has a ton...this is the one I have.

now, it bolts together with 3 bolts, which I didnt care for b/c if you dont distribute the weight evenly, it can tilt a bit...so adding a good weld at the shank should do it...I'm actually taking it over to a friends next week to do just that...the folding aspect is great as is the anti rattle shank.

additionally, b/c its a fold up, you have to be sure you get the longer shank or it will not fold up completely...it was a bit of a pain at first trying to get all this worked out, but this particular one is way more sturdy that the $99 one at walmart.

HitchesOnline, eTrailer and Hidden-Hitch have a 4"-10" high-low drops in their online catalogs. Not nice smooth, curvy pieces, but one of them may do the job.

Fabricating something would undoubtedly be more aesthetically pleasing.

The Curt MFG part got here yesterday, i'll probably install it Saturday morning. Whats your thoughts on the height clearance? Im down at south bethany, i cant imagine i'll bottom out, but to be safe i'll probably have it made, but my uncle isnt the quickest getting these made when its not a major request.
 
what i like them for is gas cans keep the smell out of the 4runner
i have a home made one buddy works for a steel company and me all parts needed and welded it all up for me. nice guy huh
well it did cost me beer. after it was welded up.
 
On my 3rd generation model the tag does not get covered up. I have seen some hitch cargo carrier's that have the tag on the back of the carrier, complete with running lights.

The thing I like about them is your mileage does not seem to drop like it does with a roof carrier.
 
I attached my Surf Tag to the front of my cargo carrier. I like the setup of the alluminum one i bought since i can flip it so the reflectors face the back when i want to mount it on the back hitch, and then reconfigure it for the reflectors to face the engine and the surf tag out front when we are drivng on the Beach.
 
I have one that my dad fabbed up... It came in real handy on my last big trip... I bought two fork mount bike holders and bolted them to it here is a pic below

I am not sure of the advantage of a front mounted carrier? That is the first one I have seen, though.

I have Golden Retriever that we take on teh beach, and really dont feel taking off the carrier, and putting it back on. Thats really it, plus i always wanted one front mounted and until TWFran pointed out how, had no idea other than to spend a ridiculous amount at a specialty shop.
 
I just got a hitch haul for my birthday and had a concern.... I was worried that since my exhaust goes straight back, and with the hitch haul right there wouldn't the exhaust pipe need to be turned or else it would over heat whatever you had on the carrier or the carrier itself?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

I had mine done..removed the resonator and had a curved piece of pipe put on...check my sig for a pic.

well, I wanted stainless, but they would have had to order it, so I went with standard...and it has since rusted of course...
 
My brother in law and myself built one. they work great for anything lawnmowers snowblowers gas.
 
I just got the Harbor Freight carrier and for some reason the tube that goes into the receiver is super tight, as in I almost couldn't get it in the receiver and when I did i had to use a sledge hammer to knock it out (after having to lower the spare tire). Any suggestions? I have a 2003 V8 with factory hitch. Thanks.

Font mounted carriers are big around here. Basically ends up being your workshop when you are into beach/surf fishing. Coolers are held in the carrier, and folks mount rod holders to the very front, park near the tide line, cast their lines, and stick their rods into the rod holders until its time to reel in their catch. ALso, they store their rods in the rod holders to and from the beach since most surf rods are really long and would otherwise have to be mounted on the roof or left sticking out the rear window.

Cabelas sort of sells a rig like I am talking about:

That mounts to the bumper, but there are hitch mount versions around too.

Most of the guys around here start with a "basic" hitch-style carrier and build their own rig off that - adding their own rod holdlers and what-not.

Edit: Forgot to say, they tend to be front mounted so you can use your headlights as a light source for the times when you are night fishing...
