Hitch Harness Question....

I just took a look under the driver's side tail light...and there is a 4 prong female end under there..I am assuming this is to hook up to a utility trailer.

Where can I get the 4 prong wire that plugs into this? Or should I just buy an entire new setup and redo it? I saw on YotaTech where you run the aftermarket ones from the passenger side tailight....but since the 4 prong is already there it seems I would just need an extension or something.????

You could always make one out of a trailer harness. Just mate the two ends together and you have an "extension cord" with a male & female to bridge the gap between your truck and the trailer.

I did this to make a longer cord for my magnetic lights - for flat towing my '87.

I can't seem to find the square adapter that fits onto the female end that is attached to the 4Runner....hmm...any ideas? Or could I just hard wire into it? There are 4 holes and on the harness from the trailer there are 5 wires (1 being a ground).

Got any quick pics of what you're talking about? My connection is next to my receiver...you say yours is under the taillight?

Here is a quick pic with my iPhone....this plug is behind the driver's side wheel. It might not even be for the trailer harness, but I don't know. I am not sure where the wiring even went!

Time for a re-wire?

I know the converter to go from the european lights to the USA style lights is behind the pass. side panel ( on my old 96 anyway ) so I do not know what is on the drivers side.

topdown, I think you are correct about time for a rewire. I got under there yesterday...the plug that I took a pic of is wired to the 'black box' behind the driver's tail light...had to take the rear inside panel off. After tinkering with it for about 30 minutes and touching this wire to that wire and that wire to this...I decided the box must be faulty..and after reading online it seems that it is a common problem.

So I ordered

So I will post when I get this working...hopefully won't take too long and hopefully that is the problem.

I hope so, b/c I am a moron..haha...the info made it sound plug and play....so hopefully it is. I think it just mounts on the opposite side from where the original is.

Well, the adapter was plug and play but it is still not working...any ideas? The tail lights on the actual 4Runner work fine but the trailer lights are not working at all. Any ideas? The trailer lights were working fine last week.

Probably a bad ground. If you hooked it up properly and the truck's taillights work...it should work.

I grounded it to the factory grounds that were already screwed into the metal.....weird. Maybe I need to scratch it completely down to the metal and check it?

Everything was hooked up correctly on my end...the trailer ground was rusted...I attached it somewhere else and it works fine.

Maybe i am misinformed, but i think the plug that you were originally talking about, the one you took a picture of, IS the plug for the tow package, I have the same thing. My t4r had a tow package but was removed because of rust. I think i found a OEM replacement that fits this, for $12. considering the black box is still functioning properly, if not, i'll be doing what you did.

What is funny is that I bought the aftermarket bypass and then found out that the trailer wasn't grounded properly...so I have no idea if my black box was malfunctioned or not....I am just going to pretend that it was.

I fixed my dad's trailer a few weeks ago with a similar problem. Trailer ground on one side was bad. Only affected the driver's side brake/blinker light. If you were right up by it, or it was dark, you could see it work, but it was just REALLY dim. Quick fix.....I like those!!
