Hitch Immobilizer?

So I know there is locking hitch pins that are supposed to keep your receiver from rattling when using - but seeing how I just went through the painful process of having to have a shop cut out a faulty & broken pin... I am thinking of going another route.

Anyone use something like this? Made by a company called Blue Ox, sounds good in principal - just wondering if anyone has had any experience...

If you had to run to a shop to get a pin cut off this is probably beyond you, but I drill a hole in the bottom of my receiver and tap it for a decent sized coarse thread bolt. Tighten the bolt against whatever you stick in the receiver and no more rattle.

Well I'll spare you the boring details on how it wasn't a simple pin but a threaded anti-theft unit that snapped the internal collar so it had to be cut from within the hitch from the backside then :biggrin2:

Not a bad idea BUT... if you lived in a place where it rains 9 months of the year that is going to seize very quickly. Like so many of the "simple" fixes that people put forth, it's all great if you have no weather to deal with.

I live just south of you and have never run into hitches seizing to the receiver.

This maybe a dumb idea, but why not just take it out? Then theres nothing to get stolen, anti-theft devices to get gummed up or key's to get lost.

Are you leaving the drawbar in all time time and it's just rattling around? If so I would definitely just take it off... it's not doing you any good back there, plus it makes parking a little trickier and in my opinion it makes getting stuff in and out of the trunk more of a PITA. And obviously it can't be stolen if it's not there.

If it is rattling while towing, I'm surprised it's much of an issue because the weight of the trailer pushing on it should keep it pretty stable.

In my short use of one like that - they don't work very well. A threaded hitch pin like this works very well. I assume you're using for some type of rack?

I had something like that in my Yakima rack. It started to strip so I put a regular pin in it.

I find that a generous amount of CLP will unstick them... most times.

Mine's rusted to shit and I'm going to have to swap out the recovery shackle for a ball hitch pretty soon--not thrilled about what may happen.
