Hole in BFG KO2 Tire - should I replace??

We had an amazing trip to Moab (from Florida) last week - but it looks like one of our tires sustained some damage (oh no!).

Interestingly I didn't notice the hole in the sidewall until I got home. Glad we didn't have a blowout on the 1600 miles we traveled on highway home!

However, to me this speaks some to the toughness of these tires.

So now I need to make a decision and I was hoping for some help!

The question I have regards whether anyone has any experience with something like this.

Should I just tuck this guy under the truck as the spare (I have a full size spare with 4runner trail wheel as spare now) or should I not chance this hole even a little and just replace the tire?

I practically drove across the country with this, unknowingly. So the tire has held up. So perhaps it's a suitable spare... but would it be worth the risk for you?

Normally I don't recommend "extended warranties" on anything... except for road-hazard on off-road tires. If you had road-hazard just go get it replaced.

Otherwise... yeah, I'd trash it.

It's brand new. I'll check to see if I had some sort of coverage on it. I don't usually buy that stuff either. Not the end of the world to replace... the trip was amazing.

If it's not leaking air I'd save it as a spare for an emergency situation, but definitely not use it for everyday use.

Oh yeah, as a spare? Same thing: the tire you'll depend on when you run over a screw 90 miles from nowhere.

It sucks, but, suck it up. That tire is gone. Get rid of it. Don't use it as a spare. Just get rid of it. I know it seems like you are throwing away money, but this thing can only cause you and others grief.

There is never a good time for the shit to hit the fan.

Whatever is in the hole is probably keeping it sealed. Replace with a new one and throw it on craigslist. You'll be amazed at what people will buy...

Get rid of it. That is an accident waiting to happen. Hopefully you got the road hazard warranty that most tire joints offer. Well worth the $30/tire especially if you off road.

Tires generally don't explode anymore, so I don't know that a catastrophic failure will happen but they do loose air and go flat. If it goes flat while your driving it will probably just get mushy and the truck handle weird. You probably won't notice until you turn or slow down.

But for the $150, or what ever it is, a new tire won't leave you hanging when it goes flat. ... in the middle of the night on a dark desert highway.

Think of it this way, you probably spent a few grand to get to Moab and back, just chalk it up to expenses.

A new tire is a lot cheaper than say, replacing a camera that falls off the back of your rig, right?
