yeah thats horrible advice... most staters know their chit, they know vehicles as good if not better than most of the people on this forum(maybe not specifically 4runners) but they know enough that they know 4runners did not come with projectors or HIDs, the DOT doesnt mean anything if they are in a vehicle that was never intended to have them. they know the laws and codes backwards and forwards, and if they are unclear on something(a technicality say-) then all they have to do is get on their computer and look it up/do a little search and find the code that you are violating... the problem with that is they might run accross one or two more that they had overlooked and hit you up for those as well if you flip them any BS about "oh no, its DOT, its legal..." nope wrong.

weather your right or wrong if the officer wrights you the ticket its now on you to prove him wrong and prove to a judge, who probably doesnt know crap about cars(other than his is expensive and has nice leather in it), and he is gonna rely on the officer for his expertize and side with him 99% of the time, you are gonna have to either prove him wrong in the codes(not gonna happen) or get him on a technicality like he messed up on the ticket... either way the officer will remember you and next time he sees you he might not be so nice

This is a forum you should really take things that people say with a grain of salt. What I said was a joke not to be actually put to practice. If I were actually in that situation I wouldn't fight what a cop said.

Before i did anything

i'd suggest taking the time to have the truck inspected in order to have someone make a declaration whether the HID lights are legal or not. Then id go before a judge with this declaration in hand and claim innocence.

I dont see what all the fuss is about... the federal rules apply still even if your local municipality does not have any laws codes or regs on the subject, or even if they do, and say its ok, it still not by federal standards... and in this case the states has rules/codes ect sharing the same views as the federal system... so what is the point of even fighting it or wasting time, energy and money to "see" if its legal, ITS NOT, period end of story. what dont you guys understand about this, this is not something they have left open and up for discussion...

MTD, yeah id like to take things with a grain of salt, but when people post things like that, someone is gonna take it seriously and get screwed

idk i guess its just a pet peve of mine when i people think they are gonna argue with the officer... you are only digging yourself in deeper and asking for more hassle. -i guess i shouldnt care though, its not me who is affected

laws become harder because people dont know when to call it quits and they think that by acting out they will get their way...

im taking my own advice and calling it quits with this thread before i get too wrapped up, ive stated my part, and tried as best i can to clear it up and shed some light on things -pun intended

I agree with you about the above post about it being illeagl because it is, and also what you say about giving correct advice. I know that I would want correct info for my stuff. Sorry for being so stubborn.

soooo.... yeah reading all these post i'm now at 80% gonna sell them and 20% going to keep them. If and when I do, i'll be selling everything. ballasts, wiring, relay. Im kinda sad cause it's fantastic light output, It's so good, my AUX lighting really does nothing. I guess I'll be buying more aux lighting to make up for these :hungry:

Anyway, I'll keep everyone posted.

I got my ticket-bill in the mail the other day for all the horrible life, threatening crimes my truck did. It looks like I have to pay $140 for the tickets. I'm almost tempted to just fix the windows and leave it be. So many decisions!

Just curious but is $300 a reasonable offer for my whole setup on my headlights?
bulbs, ballasts, relay, EVERYTHING??

Was the ticket for the modified headlights or just because of the hid's? If it was just for the hid's then take those out and put in regular bulbs that way you still have your cool headlights.

I'd pay $300...

Yes, that means I am joining the line of 4,000 people who also want these.

ok good to know, Sorry i'm in the middle of midterms right now, when the dust starts to settle, I'm gonna figure everyhting out.

zacattack20
It's because of the HID's. I looked for that option to put a halogen in the projector but so far it doesn't look possible without taking things apart and grinding stuff down.

I can Paypal you $300 tonight for them... please refer to my earlier post in this thread about buying them from you...

Sucks to hear that, but I completely understand. Like I said in my post, you did them right and if there was exceptions for the law, you would//should be it.
Unfortunately, there's not....

Good luck with what you do either way. I've always loved you truck- one of the nicer ones around.

Thanks WillK that means a lot.

Things are rolling along a little, Still not sure what I'm going to do about my headlights. I called in to the office and they told me i have to get things inspected. If i just leave my headlights in to where i'll have to pay a $40 ticket and have it go on my record, to where I might get pulled over again.

good new's is I'm very broke and need some cash for the holidays. I've been getting some PM's from some of you. so i really don't know how I'm going to go about doing this if I do.

Sorry for my undecisiveness, these lights are one of my favorite mods i've ever done. I do however want to start another set

I found the violation in case anyone is interested
here we go... I see some loop holes especially in #3

41-6a-1618. Sale or use of unapproved lighting equipment or devices prohibited.
(1) Except as provided under Subsection (2), a person may not use, have for sale, sell, or offer for sale for use on or as a part of the equipment of a motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, or pole trailer any head lamp, auxiliary fog lamp, rear lamp, signal lamp, required reflector, or any parts of that equipment which tend to change the original design or performance, unless the part or equipment complies with the specifications adopted under Section 41-6a-1601.
(2) The provisions of Subsection (1) do not apply to equipment in actual use prior to July 1, 1979 or to replacement parts of this equipment.

(3) A person may not use on a motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, or pole trailer any lamps under this section unless the lamps are mounted, adjusted, and aimed in accordance with this part.

Oh and here is some info about the lights if that helps make decisions.

They are 100% working however:

I cut the in-line fuse out of the harness so that it would wire straight up to my blue-sea fuse box. I have an inline fuse that came with my Duelly's that I can either send with the lights or I can solder and heat-shrink it back on for your convenience.

there is a problem with the black mounting thingi where the headlight mounts onto the adjustment brackets. I noticed this after installation and just used some spacers to tighten it up. If i end up taking things apart i'll see what i can do to fix it.

what projectors are you using? are the from another vehicle like say acura, mercedes, bmw, lexus? if so they will be DOT stamped and you can probably argue your case with the state or the inspector, especially if you show them that you have them aimed correctly and the high and low beams both work correctly and you have them installed properly. id give it a shot, worst they can do is say no, and then you can ask them for a couple of days to swap out the lights to the factory originals and come back through. thats how id do it.

-just so you know you will still technically be illegal federally though, but yeah most feds could care less. and if you get this current set up approved, id keep a copy of it with your insurance card and registration so if you ever get pulled over again you can show the officer that you have been inspected before and it was approved under such vehicle code... its worth a shot. i know id be pissed to if i had put that much work into a set of projectors.

The DOT certification doesn't go on the projector though, it goes on the outer lens. I highly doubt that there would be legal engraving on the projector itself.
