Homelink Issues

Hey i just purchased an 08 4runner a couple days ago and I am having problems programming the garage door opener. I have read the manual and tried it a bunch of times but it does not seem to be working. Any one else have this problem or am I just doing something wrong. I'll hold it up there with both buttons (on the homelink and the opener) until it starts blinking very fast. I'll take it off and then try it and bada bing nothing happens. WTF mate?

Have a drink and try again. My tech-savy 12 y/o couldn't do it. I, who can't even turn my phone on (never mind trying to make a call), got it done in 5 seconds. Did you take the battery out of the remote? And put it back BTW.

i was told use a brand new battery. older batteries they struggle getting programmed

Yeah i read that. Ill have to try that i guess. I just figured the house is kind of new so the battery has to be pretty new. I figure i am about to graduate with an electrical engineering degree i should be able to do this.

I had the same problem...here's what I learned.
In the manual the first step requires you to do what you have been doing so that the in car homelink detects the type opener you have...most likely one with a rolling code. Once the in car system learns that from your hand held remote opener, you will then go the opener itself , press the "training" button on it, return to the car and press and hold the in car opener button twice for 2 seconds each time. Afte that, the button should open your door. It's kind of a two step process and the owners manual doesn't really clarify that.

One other item to note, my unit is a genie and manufaturer let me know that it will work with up to 7 remotes. So if you have multiple cars with built in openers and a bunch of hand helds laying around, you could have probelms with a transmitter not working when you add / program a new one. I have 4 cars with builf in openers and as many remotes, so I had some issues. Too lengthy to explain in this post.

Post again if this does or doesn't work for you. I may not be explaining very clearly.

Other Options to try?

I have tried all the sequences specified several times and nothing works. I got our RX330 working using the learn button and pressing the homelink button a couple of times, but nothing on the 4Runners seems to be the magic. Even tried to program it like a non-rolling code, homelink came back and flashed but nothing. Tried to program one of the homelink buttons that has never been used vs the one I was using with my prior opener, nothing there either.

It can be tricky…here’s what I learned.

In your car, press and hold the home link button until it flashes AND press and hold the button on a working hand held remote opener at the same time. This tells the Homelink what kind system (rolling code or otherwise) that it will be linking up with. That’s step 1. After that is completely done (no flashing lights) done you can go to step two. Go to the opener, press the training button, then go back to the Homelink in the car and follow the instruction in the manual. The manual isn’t clear about the first step with the hand held to


Additionally how many remotes and homelinks do you have? I found out that you can only have so many, something like 6 or so. Each hand held or button on your Homelink will count as an opener. If you have a lot laying around like I did for kids and visiting family, you may need to clear the opener memory and then program only remotes you wish to use. Seems like holding the program button on the opener for 10 – 15 seconds did the trick on mine. Basically, if you max out the memory, it won’t accept any more remotes or will start deleting old one as you program new ones. I found this out from Homelink Tech Support. thanks, I did what you suggested but don't think I held them until it flashed, so I will try that tomorrow as well as pointing in toward the garage unit. I always back the truck in and it does have all windows tinted, so that's about the only other thing I have read but not yet tried. I will let you know the results, appreciate the help very much!

I had the same issue initially on my '08 also. I finally reread everything and it turned out the garage opener was the rolling code type. Once I saw the "train" or "learn" button (can't recall) on the opener, I knew exactly what to do. As described above, it then worked like a charm.
