Homelink will not program to my gate.

Hi All, anyone else have an issue with the 2016 4R programming their neighborhood gate? The remote programmed instantly in my 2014 Lexus using the Homelink system installed in that car, but for whatever reason will not program in the new 4R I brought home.

Homelinks customer service numbers is more or less a recital of whats in the owners manual.

I do not have access to a learn button or the insides of the gate housing and I doubt my HOA will forgo the $35 remove they love to sell in order to dispatch someone to open up the unit for me.

This is on a Liftmaster front gate (I dont know the model). My Craftsman home garage door opener programmed instantly.

Any ideas?

Try clearing the memory and follow the steps below. If it is a rolling code gate then you will probably never get it to work, not sure why it is working in the Lexus (they are fancier so that could be it). I may have read your post wrong but it sounds like $35 will fix this and get someone to press the learn button on the logic board of the gate for you. If this is the case then I personally would just pay it and save myself the aggravation.



To clear the memory of all three buttons in the HomeLink transmitter, hold down the two outside buttons (1 & 3, 2 being the one directly under the house logo/light) for approx. 20 seconds until the red light begins to flash rapidly. Release both buttons.

Phase 1

Be sure people and property, including yourself and your vehicle are NOT in the travel path of the garage door and that nothing will be struck when the door attempts to close or open !

Turn your vehicles ignition to the "Run" (or "accessory") position.
Hold the transmitter 1 - 3 inches away from the HomeLink buttons in you vehicle (do not block your view of the HomeLink indicator light)
Simultaneously press the transmitter button and the HomeLink button you wish to program (you may need two hands). Hold both buttons pressed until the indicator light changes from a slow flash to a rapid flash.
Rapid flashing indicates successful programming - Release both buttons (HomeLink and transmitter)
Press and hold the newly programmed HomeLink button,
If the indicator light is solid (not flashing) your garage door should now activate and you are complete. There is no need for Phase 2
If the indicator light flashes for 2 seconds before turning solid (not flashing) your garage door opener is rolling code technology and you must continue Phase 2 of these instructions.
Phase 2 - Only perform the following steps after successfully completing Phase 1.

A second person will make the following steps quicker and easier. Be sure people and property, including yourself and your vehicle are NOT in the travel path of the garage door and that nothing will be struck when the door attempts to close or open !

Locate the "Learn" (or "Smart") Button on the motor-head unit of your garage door opener. (This button is normally located on the back side, near the hanging wire antenna. Consult your manual for exact location.)
Fully press and quickly release the "Learn" Button (holding this button pressed for too long will erase all existing transmitters and keypads and they will need to be reprogrammed into the unit)
Within 30 second of pressing the "Learn" Button, return to the vehicle. Press the desired HomeLink button for 2 second, then release. Repeat this one step up to 3 times.
Your Garage door opener should now activate with a single press of the HomeLink button

I tried the handheld transmitter but that never worked on my 10 Legacy, 14 4Runner, 12 Tacoma.

always ended up going back to the learn button on the main unit every time.

Our neighborhood just upgraded our security gate with rolling code gate transmitter. I tried to program the handheld to the 4Runner per the 4Runner manual with out success until I cleared the button I was trying to program and then pressing the 4Runner's button about 30 times X 5 seconds over a full minute before it finally went green.

Our 2014 Camry took it the first try. Another 2010 vehicle I have was not as bad as the 4Runner but took it after 20 seconds of pressing.

Every vehicle Homelink I've every tried seems to act just a little different than the previous one but not enough to not program eventually. Just keep at it.

Note: the button I was trying to program on the 4Runner had never been programmed before, but clearing it seemed to help.

I have tried all of this, the $35 is what they charge for a remote. They will not send someone to open up the unit for me and instead want the $35 for me to use a separate remote. I guess Im stuck only using homeland for the garage door at this point.

Las Vegas problems, almost everything is gated here, and almost everything outside of town is BLM (good for trail running). I grew up in the country, and honestly I dont miss it. I love the convenience of being 5min from the store, and 30min from 7000ft elevation and aspen groves, while also being 20min from Red Rock Canyon. I can get "out" pretty quickly from where I am and when you leave Las Vegas its pure desolation.

Borrow the remote from a neighbor to program your homelink. Surely a gated community has enough stay at home mom's that it wouldn't be a problem to run off to the gate with their remote for an hour.

I have a remote for my wife's car, but you must have access to the motor on the gate to use the learn button. It wont program off the remote alone.

Sounds like you're pretty much stuck paying for the service visit or another remote, unless you can hit the learn button through a gap in the housing with a wire hanger. I'd just make sure you have something to insulate the end of the hanger you're holding in the event you connect with something that isn't the button you're aiming for.

Thought about this, ended up just getting a remove and painting the clip matte black with some high heat spray paint. It would not fit not he visor since the visors are thicker than usual so it is clipped into the small storage area above the front cup holder. I painted the clip so it would blend in with the dash and not be an eyesore. What can you do...

Why not remove the clip and use 3M velcro to attach the remote to a less visible, yet still convenient location, like the lower side of the dash on the left side of the steering column? This is something I've done on all of my cars without Homelink. This would also free up that small storage space you're currently using.

Try to set up the homelink with my 05 4R Limited. Spent a whole afternoon playing with the homelink, try tons different ways, and still can't make it work.

It makes me very frustrated because I can setup my 2011 Tundra just in 2 minutes. Just need to pair up with the transmitter and the homelink, hold for few secs, it works.

With the 4R, I tried pairing, tried with learn button too. Press, hold, and release for 20x times.... also tried long hold, also tried rapid press..... still NO~

What the heck is going on? Hope someone can help. Thanks.

I just went through similar frustration programming an older Liftmaster opener. Homelink's support line was also no help. Ultimately figured out that the problem was related to using a 2 button remote. I took the single button remote from our 3rd garage door and programmed it to the door opener I wanted to operate, and that instantly synced with the Homelink.

I have the Liftmaster too. It's a recent one (1-2 years old) and I have a 3-button remote. That could probably the problem.

After sync your Liftmaster with single button remote, then can pair with your homelink? I wonder where to get the one-button remote... haha~

I just tried to program all three buttons to work with the Lifemaster opener, then try one-by-one to pair with the homelink... still no luck.....

Some gates are accessed through an access control system. The gated community admin would have to install a Wiegand receiver so that they can program your vehicle through the access control system. Something like a LiftMaster CPWR3 receiver would work. Only issue is that they are no longer available, but you might find one through craigslist or ebay. Those seem to work well.

I had a different experience with Homelink support than some of the replies in this thread. After trying steps from the manual numerous times, I called and got ahold of an actual person who walked me through the setup on the phone, and we got it working on the first try.

Borrow a working transmitter from someone and have your T4 learn it's code. They try the gate and hope it works. -- That's all I have.
