Program OEM homelink in 2006 limited

I’ve been using homelink in my car for just one garage door for a while now with no issues, however now that I’m trying to add a gate opener to a second button I’m running into a problem. I get both openers programmed to work on their own but as soon as I add a second one to the system, which ever was programmed first gets forgotten. I am using the same method to program each. Hold the two outer buttons till the light flashes
Hold the remote next to the desired homelink button and push both simultaneously until the homelink light flashes rapidly
(If necessary press learn code on opening unit and then press desired homelink button 4 times or until it opens or closes the unit
When I go the the procedure the second time it’s as if that wipes my entire system, is there a different procedure to follow to program a second button?

I believe holding the two outer buttons is only required for new users as it wipes the existing codes. sounds like you are mating a pair, wiping the codes and mating a new pair to different button. try it again but skip the first part about holding the 1st & 3rd button down.
