Homemade 100+ watt LED off road lights

I searched a few different phrases but couldn’t locate the specific topic.

Has anyone made their own off road LED lights using those 100 watt LED’s from Amazon/eBay? They’re not “100 watt equivalent”, they’re actual 100 watt led modules. Cooling and waterproofing seem to be the big challenges but it seems like a cheap alternative —and fun project— to some off the shelf, considerably more expensive options.

I’m curious if anyone has done something similar. I’m going to try it out either way, but checking if there’s any experience here in the forums to learn from first.

I’m interested to see how you tackle locating those large drivers. One of the reasons brand name light bars cost what they do is due to the driver size. Typically, the more compact a wattage driver is, the more expensive it is. You could run a driver the size of a 9v battery, but it won’t come close to driving the kind of lumen output you’re looking to achieve.

That being said, if mounting the light bar in a bumper location, you could use a remote located driver with a deutsch connector and a whip; i.e. aftermarket HID setups

The remote located driver would allow for whatever thermal management would be needed in order to run the light bar for multiple hours at a time without the constraints of attaching to the light bar itself.

The light bar could attach to a smaller heat sink, if it needs one at all. Generally speaking, LEDs do not generate heat in and of themselves.


I’m game to discussing how to make this work.

Any electrical engineers on here? They may have some suggestions as well.
